[Chris Gear] Congrats EP. Btw, some criticized the bridge deal at the time. Nux will pay less in AAV over 5 & 8 yr spans by having signed the bridge followed by this deal vs the alternative. Plus the extra cap space this year has been invaluable to roster construction. Just sayin’.

Chris Gear was an assistant general manager for the Canucks during the Benning era. Survived the benning firing but was let go after Jim Rutherford was hired when he cleaned house.

  2. EpicRussia

“benning was actually a genius” come on, no he wasn’t

  3. mephnick

Petey taking a good price on a 3rd deal doesn’t suddenly make your bad process leading to the bridge a good thing, Chris.

Hey Chris- how’d they get in a tight cap situation in the first place? Just saying.

Not mentioned, how the Gear era Canucks backed themselves into a corner and had to take the “cap savings” approach because that summer they acquired Oliver Ekman-Larsson at 90% of his cap hit for his declining years after being injury ridden, signed Travis Hamonic to a contract that tripled his cap hit, gave Tucker Poolman 10mil and had buyout penalties to navigate from Virtanen and Holtby.

Wasn’t it rumored that the 8yr contract was going to cost us $9-$9.5m AAV when he signed the bridge? As much as I like the $11.6m AAV of the new contract, imagine if he was making $9.5m for 5 more years.

Of course, that management group wouldn’t have been able to double down as hard (which probably would have been another positive).

Speaking of bad bridges. This and the Tacoma Narrows are right up there.

Meanwhile, Dylan Guenther, 9OA pick they traded to Arizona for OEL, just had a 3pts game today. He would look good on Petey’s wing right now.

How this guy is not in hiding after how they left the organization is crazy to me. Now he tries to take credit for other people’s work cleaning up his mess

  9. _HoochieMama

This is such a horrendous take lmfao.

Sure, it worked out fine. But they had absolutely no choice but to bridge him because they opted to go after OEL. Make no mistake we got a free year from him today but we will be paying that for the next 7 seasons.

This also tries to suggest that the value is good across his career as opposed to acknowledging the reality that we got him at a discount during years we were horrific and now will pay him full price for the years we hope to contend (with the exception of this season). We could have had Pettersson for millions less for the next 4-5 seasons which would have been hugely beneficial as those are the years we will hope to contend.

    His logic sucks ass

  10. slipperysoup

Eh an 8 year deal immediately would have the deal expire at 30 years old and at that point who knows how much he’s worth. Right now we pretty cover his whole prime from 26-33yo

  11. SpectreFire

Not having to eat OEL’s shitty cap for the next decade would also be invaluable for roster construction. Just saying.

Remember when local media was all bent out of shape this guy got fired LMAO.

I still maintain he was their source inside the org.

  13. DishwasherFromSurrey

What if kneejerk has been Chris Gear all along?

  14. barelyincollege

Take the L, Chris. You were fired over 2 years ago and don’t have a job with the organization anymore. Why are you inserting yourself into the conversation?

  15. YouCanFucough

Good grief. A younger, less mature version of myself would create a twitter account right now just to flame this idiot.

This front office has pulled off miracle after miracle to turn the ship around and remedy what was one of the worst cap sheets in the NHL. The audacity to take credit for those who are cleaning up after your mistakes is beyond dumbfounding.

Maybe I’m asking for too much intellectual honesty from a member of one of the worst front offices of the 21st century though

  16. Nice2See

Haha c’mon. If you’re gonna take a victory lap you’ve gotta take the walks of shame and there are several of those
