NJ Devils Zapped by TB Lightning 4-1: Not Looking Good

The New Jersey Devils lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 4-1 on 2/25/24 at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

Another pathetic performance in a very important game.

I discuss the game and some other thoughts in this recap video.

  1. Considering how important the 3rd period of this crucial game was, the Devils had absolutely no perceived sense of urgency for most of the last 20 minutes. Most fans left when we were down 3-1 and the "Fire Lindy" chants started with around 2 minutes left. I also saw that 'Frank the Tank' got tossed for trying to start a "Fire Lindy" chant… terrible that people in his section actually complained

  2. I hate to say it, but this team has shown us what they are. I see them getting 2 points on the West Coast trip at most. If they couldn't win today, when they needed it desperately (and every other team ahead of them in the Metro lost), then they really have no hope. This is a complete breakdown that goes beyond the injuries and the goaltending. It is indictment of the system they play, their heart, and their mental and physical toughness. They have more to fix next year than we are admitting.

  3. Well boys I guess I will be wearing my jersey in the golf course this year. Season is over Lindy needs to be fired, we need to get a goalie We need players who want to throw bodies and fist if need be this team is beyond soft.

  4. Was at the game, 2 things I saw that stood out

    1. They always looked for perfect pass, just shoot the puck on net and look for rebounds

    2. Ruff’s decisions on when to do a line change are terrible times, like on the 2nd pp he made a line change with his team just waiting there for others to come on the ice.

  5. I think the Devs should stay put and not pay a high price for a trade at this point. I think what we really need is D man that block shots, clears the crease and grit, to at least give our goalies a chance to see the puck and have less shots get through. I think you can put Brodeur in his prime and he’d have to stand on his head Dayton day. The D is soft….net presence is not existent in the O zone.

  6. I couldn't agree with you more. I like Ruff, but he needs to go into player development. I'd like to See Berube brought in as head coach. Put Meier on the right side. Trade Mercer for Saros. This team is so soft.

  7. Now I'm on the "they're done" train with you my friend. It's a shame. I don't know what it is, it just looks like none of these players have any chemistry with each other, it's weird. Everyone just seems to be doing their own thing out there on the ice with no team oriented plan. How we go from looking like a cohesive team last year to what it looks like this year is beyond comprehension. I'm so bummed about it all.

  8. Nico Daws NEEDS a break. Being goalie is extremely stressful and hard.
    The position isn't comfortable
They are always sweating so they need a bunch of water so they don't get dehydrated
It's not good for your confidence when you have played multiple games in a row and keep getting scored on – mainly because the defense sucks
    And your always stressed
    Daws NEEDS a break

  9. So I mean both teams had back to backs and played their "starters" yesterday, now I think Poulter should have started yesterday giving Daws a game off and then having our top goalie for the more important game tonight, it was also the Habs so that gives the kid a easier NHL debut. Granted Akira wasn't really to blame for this one (didn't love the 3rd goal), but he didn't out goalie their backup either.

Lindy and the goalie coach need to have been fired last night and Fitz needs to trade for a goalie now. I still would be fine with a patch Allen-Kahkonen level goalie for like a 3rd or 4th as an emergency everything else is too expensive and give the team/fans some hope down the stretch, ideally yeah make a splash for an elite tendy in Saros or Swayman. I'd also be happy with Thompson or UPL.

  10. We have the players, it’s not like we are the blue jackets or hawks. We have number one center, we have two D man that could be top pairing guys. We need a goalie and a new coach. We get some grit etc and this team will be fine. But we really are in our window just need to tool it better. You made me laugh my ass off with the goalie dark cloud, so true

  11. Just when I thought our days of being a "Micky Mouse Operation" were over, I get pulled back down to earth… violently

  12. im not surprised by the outcome of this game, the team is too young and too soft, schmid was awful there were soooo many times in the tampa game where i was watching him slide out to no mans lands for no reason a couple times it caused a goal against, and we are nothing more than lucky that this game was 7 or 8-1, stamkos kucherov point all of those guys either hit the post or missed a wide open net in that game at least once. but i do think the devils arent sellers, we arent selling our core players, there is no need for that, but toffoli maybe miller and maybe another name or 2 that isnt a part of the core should at least be shopped around, and i think the devils still could be buyers, but only if the player we get has term remaining on their contract, or comes with an extension, hanafin maybe just to provide an example. saros is not the answer in my opinion i like him and would love him to be a devil but im not giving them mercer and 1st round pick and a prospect for him and that is what it will cost and because of that hes not the answer if nashvilles asking prices goes down to lets say mercer for saros 1 for 1, then ya id consider it or even mercer and a pick, but not the prospect we need them for moves that have to be made for those depth pieces that have grit in the offseason. im not the gm though, but id personally wait for at least the goalie until the offseason, a deadline deal that does however become more and more appealing in our situation especially if we may be shipping mercer to nashville is for a guy named henrique. i think hed be a valuable pickup if we can land him for a prospect and like a pick or something.

  13. I've been supporting Lindy for a while when many fans were calling for his head…now though…I have jumped on the "Fire Lindy" train.

Furthermore…I honestly think Fitzy is on the hot seat as well. He's failed at bolstering up the goaltending, addressing our porous defense, and adding some grit. Look what our rivals have in Rempe…the kid has been setting the tone pretty much every game so far in his young NHL career.

  14. It's a fact…a team plays one way in front of a goalie that they trust and have faith in…BUT…they play completely different in front of a goalie that they don't trust will get them key saves.

  15. I love the fire Lindy and get rid of Fitz. And then the silence when you ask who is going to replace them. Uninformed emotional fan base haha. Lindy pushed this team to perform above their ability last year. Now without Hamilton and a lack of physicality and defensive ability all around the fans want everyone fired but can’t think of who to bring in. Same thing with the “go get a goalie but I don’t want to give anyone up” crowd. Good luck!

  16. I was at the game. The fans were really riding the team and there were endless "Fire Lindy" chants. Bad fan base sometimes. I never to a game to boo the home team.

  17. Listen to the fat middle-aged man who never played hockey give his opinion. I love The Devils, but our fans are typical suburban trash.
