Toronto Maple Leafs Defencemen Morgan Rielly will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Tuesday for his cross check to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Grieg. How many games do you think he deserves to be suspended?

Just what the leafs need a weaker blue line
This suspension will slap
If the sens did this, they would lose a first round pick.
I somewhat agree.
Both parties are right and wrong but the wrong-doing by Greig hurt the Leafs ego.
The wrong-doing by Reilly could have legitimately injured Greig.
Not all wrongs are the same.
Who cares if it’s a slap shot or another shot. The puck is in the net.
Calling it now. 8 games. Appeals start at 6 games so there is no reason to ever give 6. Its either 5/less or 7/8 imo
Who cares, if it was anyone else from another team there wouldn't be a massive outcry and such news.
Jesse, did you forget that a fight in the last 5 minutes of the game is a one game suspension and a $10k fine for the coach? Rule 46.21.
5 games
Personally it can't be less than Perron. 6+ games. Id give him 1 more than Perron bc at least Perron has an excuse. Although wrong player, he didn't know at the time. Rielly went after Greig for an excessive empty net goal, which isn't against the rules and teams show up other teams quite often. Leaf fans that support Rielly's actions are just delusional. Slapshot empty net goal….Cross check his effin Face! Scream into our goalies face after scoring…that's cool.
Jesse – love you – love SPDN – but please don't hand the floor over to the The Twit-fer-Brains crowd again. Especially Major Chode @IowaAvsFan
Here's my take as a Sens fan:
Would I consider this poor sportsmanship if Greig made that play in a house league game between two games full of kids? Sure. But the NHL is different. It isn't about developing hockey and life skills any more it is about entertainment. Poor sportsmanship or not what Greig did was entertaining and within the rules. NHL games are full of bad sportsmanship: players screaming at other players, at refs, heck even fans booing a player on the opposing team. All of that is 'poor sportsmanship' but a regular part of an NHL game, I'm not sure I understand why this should be different.
All that being said I thought an appopriate suspension would be like 2 or 3 games. Perron got 6 for an obvious attempt to injure against Zub earlier this year that was obviously way more vicious. Rielly's play was definitely suspension worthy, but 6 is too much in mind, even as a sens fan.
I don't really understand the varying takes. It seems kind of obvious to me. I like Reilly sticking up for his team. I have no issue if he had gone over and given a cross-check shiver to Grieg's ribs and left a little mark. Maybe he gets fined for that. Money well spent. But you take it high to the head, after the whistle, blindsided, with intent, it's gonna be a major suspension. You don't get a sentence reduction for that. Good behavior doesn't matter for that. "I was right to be mad" does not help you. It's going to be 5+ games. It has to be.
Morgan Reilly channeled his innner dale hunter, dude needs to play with that tenacity every game
6
so next year when Greig challenges Reilly to a fight, will Reilly drop the gloves or will they need to call up Reaves from Robidas Island for that game
2 games
Greig catapulted himself into high status among the senators fanbase for reigniting a rivalry, by doing something completely harmless, yet damaging a certain toronto player's fee-fees so hard that we have nuclear beef again.
10 to 20 games , Dale Hunrer got 20 for pretty much the same thing
I wouldn't even say both guys did something wrong. Slap shotting a puck into an empty net is 100% within the rules of the game. If you don't like how someone scores don't let them score. Greig broke an unwritten rule about not making the game too fun for fans and Morgan Rielly cross checked a guy in the head. These aren't comparable.
Rielly has zero suspension history, and has 2 PIMs on the season.
Considering what led up to his actions, I doubt he’ll get more than 2-3 games.
But an in-person hearing typically means multiple games.
However, all you folk talking smack that he deserves 10+ games..need to get your head out of your a$$
I think it will be 5 or 6 because of where it was in the game. He scored into an Empty Net….the game was done. So a leaf takes exception to how HARD he shoots the puck?? Seems pretty petty to me. Ya, you lost to a bottom feeder. You’re fighting to stay in the playoff race, so you’re REALLY frustrated!! But if you really have to do something about it, drop the stick and get in his face. Grab him by the sweater, maybe throw a punch. All this ridiculous talk about being soft if you let it slide🙄. Now your team, who is very thin on the D to being with, will be without one for a number of games. Not Reilly’s finest hour!
Even if you aren't on either side for what caused the event there's no way you stay on Toronto's side when you see what happened. Not if you have any impartiality at all. Your reaction to having your feelings hurt cannot ever be to crosscheck someone in the head. And when your motivation is clearly revenge you should get a massive suspension. Having said that we've already seen Spezza knee a guy in the head and have a 6 game suspension reduced to 4. So we'll see where this lands and where it ends up. Probably won't be enough.
Honestly, unless the guy got injured, I don't think it should be a suspension, maybe a fine. The guy did a slap shot when he coulda just poked it in. The real problem is the Leafs showing no passion or care before this moment.
Hilarious that he slapped it! With so many Leaf fans in the rink it was an emphatic up yours!!! 10 games would be more than fair!!!
Honestly Jesse, I almost always agree with your takes, this one included. Both guys are right and wrong.
Greig was intentionally trying to disrespect the leafs with that slapshot, that's the kind of player he is. He certainly should have expected something from the leafs for that, and he would have fought Rielly if Rielly didn't cross check him to the head.
If I were Rielly, I would have went after Greig for that disrespect, but the cross check to the head was clearly too much and honestly the cowards' way out. Drop your gloves and fight him like a professional hockey player should. He's 29 and Greig is 21 but probably would have been a fair fight.
Either way, leafs' fans should be happy that Reilly stood up for his team and disappointed that Reaves did not do the only thing he is paid to do. And sens fans should be proud that they have a kid like Greig willing to stir the pot like that against a big rival, disrespectful or not.
The only thing I really care about… THE BATTLE OF ONTARIO IS BACK BABY.
How can you say the dep of player safety or the NHL are "against the leafs" or want to make an example of them. The leafs are literally the golden child of the league…
"Slapshotted??"
Why can’t you slap shot a puck in the net? And why does Morgan rielly have a right to respond? I hope they give him a stupid tax of like 5-8 games
There's no "both sides are right" here… one guy scored a goal, the other guy crosschecked him in the head. One did something you're allowed to do, one guy did something you're very much not allowed to.
Should be at least 5 games or more
6 games.
I have being watching hockey for 50yrs. I have never seen a slap shot on an empty net when you are the only one there.
5k
3-2
They can’t buy at the deadline… they have $800,000 is cap space lol.
20 GAMES MINIMUM GET OUT OF HERE …. WHAT A LOSER … TYPICAL SOFT LEAFS….. GREAT SLAPSHOT EMPTY NETTER … GOOD ON HIM . RIDLY DID IT FOR HIS TEAM AND FANS AN FIRED IT HOME BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5 games and Grieg gets to cross check him back to his face
Ridder knew exactly what he was doing. He absolutely was doing a goal cele. His cele put ZERO players a risk, other than their feelings. Should he have to face a cross-check to the head, 40' from the net?
No.
Matthews, in the same game, taunted the Sens, and fans, after his 1st period goal. There is zero difference except nobody drove their stick into Matthews head.
If you can't do a cele, without earning a stick in the head, there needs to be more sticks in the head. If that doesn't appeal to you as a fan, maybe you should not be defending Rielly.
He will get 6 games
Cheese and crackers, Zadorov got two day suspension for much less
