after this episode, i'm just glad i dont umpire anywhere near a video judge lol
so questions on that one where the attacker at the PC broke too early, twice. 1) the whistle wasnt blown til after the shot, what if they scored? i guess GB was upset because they basically get a redo after not scoring. 2) if the same attacker is constantly breaking early, is there place for misconduct call?
26:55 I've got more sympathy for Tess Howard than the previous two players, but it's still a Y10
Thanks for another entertaining and informative episode π
Looking at the definition for deliberate, for me as a non native speaker, sheds some light on where Keely is coming from in the third situation.
Would this still have been a YC10, if she would have missed the player?
Phew Keely… this week really tested you! First with the tech issues and then with the discussions. Thank you for staying patient and explaining the key points so clearly. I am commenting half way through the video so this relates to that part of the stream.
You said, "I think we can do a lot better than we do…" regarding the rigour we as umpires should apply to our decision making and I fully agree. Yes hockey is a fast game and we are called on to make decisions quickly about a situation that occurred in milli-seconds, but that doesn't mean we can't break the play down and run the mental checks you mention before making the decision. Our brains are incredible to begin with and we help to train our brains by using tools like FHUmpires streams, attending courses, watching & participating in more hockey, retroactively working through scenarios, discussions with other participants, etc, etc.
As umpires we HAVE to train ourselves to be more analytical of the details of the play. I don't mean we need to be looking to find more fouls, but rather look for measurable indicators that assist in making the correct decision. Keely used the word emperical to describe this and it is the perfect description: Verifiable or provable by means of observation (or experiment). In my experience, if I am feeling an emotion guiding the decision, I need to be more emperical before making the call.
I got the feeling that some of the confusion around defining 'deliberate' is caused by not understanding what should be judged as deliberate. Using Keely's example, a defender making a baseline tackle is deliberately making the tackle, but that does not mean they are deliberately playing the ball off the backline. In clip 3, you may feel the GB player deliberately swung her stick (reckless) but that is not the same as deliberately trying to hit a player (which would be a red card). Similarly, swinging through knowing she might hit a player is not the same as deliberately hitting a player. All 3 are serious offenses, as is the punishment but this is why it is critical to carefully analyse the situation.
