Nick Foligno gives CANDID description of Blackhawks performance vs Canucks | CHGO Blackhawks

Nick uh thanks for being with us after a uh a tough loss 4-2 to the Vancouver kcks yeah no that was uh that was a tough one for sure I was disappointed obviously in the uh the start of our game especially just as two games kind

Of in not in a row but in the Minnesota one as well we just didn’t have the same start that we needed to have and um we got to figure that out I mean it’s it’s costing us games right now because we’re just not as engaged as we need to be and

Um you know we’re getting the result we just heard from uh Seth Jones before he jumped on um Mario shared his postgame conference and and he talked about that first period uh where you guys had one shot on goal and just sort of said it was embarrassing and it’s it’s got to

Get better how do you you know and we know it’s tough there’s injuries it’s inexperience all those sort of things but how do you get those starts better and how do you how do you prevent the message wearing thin if it’s the same message every day with no response yeah

I mean it’s that’s the disappointing part is is we’re well prepared for these games it’s not like we’re you know we’re going in we’re not knowing what we’re supposed to be doing it just comes down to a mindset honestly it comes down to how bad you want the puck and how bad

You want to make a difference and uh you know I don’t even know I I want to be careful because it’s not Doom or Gloom I mean listen it’s it happens in in Seasons great teams do it as well but you know for us it’s just such an emphasis because we’re we’re already

Behind the eightball in a lot of ways right and we we can’t afford to put ourselves in that position and one shot on Net’s not going to win us games right and and or zero at one point so we have to understand just how we need to play

The the the style the tenacity that we have to play with and it has to start from puck drop and that’s just on guys personally getting themselves ready to to perform and do the job that the team needs them to do and there’s no other real explanation for it it’s not on

Coaching it’s on individual players to to just dig in and you know there’s no reason why we have one shot on net in the first period that’s that’s just not ready to play and that’s just not engaged and not you you know your head’s

Not in the game where it needs to be and it’s disappointing and it seems like a lot of times too if there’s a bad goal that happens and or something like that it’s like our our we lose all the air in in our sales and that just that’s just

Can’t happen it’s you know that may be early on in the season but we’re we’re well past that point and we have to start rectifying that in order to give ourselves a chance to win hockey games you guys get the big Power Play goal from Tyler Johnson you you factored in

On that with the the the very athletic keeping at the blue line and then getting the puck down low and then it looks like colum Blackwell ties the game like that puck was like are we thought we were going to hear the horn that they

Were going to go back and look at that it went in because it didn’t make a sound and then the Canucks come down and make it three1 I mean what what’s it like on the bench after play like where you think you tie it and then you’re back down to in in a

Heartbeat I mean that’s that’s the craziest part of probably this game and that’s what our team has to realize is for how bad we played we we were down by one goal had a chance to tie it and yeah it goes the other way but that’s the

Breaks of the game right it doesn’t go in you give them a little bit of cushion now boom they’re up 3-1 and and that’s you know it’s it’s hard those are the the but you know we respond and you keep pushing and you know you find ways but

It’s against a good team like Vancouver who knows how to win understands who they are that they’re not going to give you many opportunities like that and we pushed at the end listen you know I’m proud of of the way we we pushed at the end but it’s too little too late why

Putting ourselves in those positions let let’s be the team that has the lead for a while and holds on to it and and makes teams try to open up and we score another one right um you know so that’s that’s the frustrating part look at we

We for how poorly we played we were 2-1 possibly 2-2 could have been um but it’s too little too late and and I think that’s the the frustrating part for this group is that we’re we’re starving for wins we’re starving for good things to happen right and and we gotta understand

It’s it’s not g no team is going to give it to us every team right now especially after the break they’re all fighting for their playoff lives they’re all fighting to get in position um so no easy night is coming and we can’t expect any team

To give one away to us so we have to dig in and and be the team that takes every game away from those teams well the last 40 minutes you know the response was was better and it was a much more even game and look Vancouver is one of the best

Teams in the league they are dynamic they are deep they are super skilled but the last 40 were you guys were right there with them take us into locker room in that first intermission and what was the mood what were the I know you can’t get specific you don’t want to say

Exactly what you said but you know what was what was the mindset in the room going after after the first period there that changed things for the next 40 well I mean Luke came in and blasted us which we had every right to do so so uh there

Wasn’t much that needed to be said it was obviously disappointing and um I think guys realized we have way more to give here and that was pretty much the message dig in get you know get to our game get to who we are and you know it’s

It was disappointing that we even gave that you know performance in the first but we have a chance to rectify we’re only down one goal and uh so that was where you know I was proud of our guys for pushing back but we shouldn’t need those up you know that’s what I’m trying

To we’re trying to grow here right we’re trying to we talk about that right it’s can’t be two steps forward one step back or one step forward two steps back it’s got to be okay we we’ve got the identity of a hardworking nasty team we know we’re you know we’ve lost some players

And you know we’re depleted but you can you can control effort you can control work ethic you can control the tenacity with what you play that makes up for some of the talent maybe that you don’t have so that’s the the identity that we have to have and we cannot waiver from

It and you know maybe tonight was a good lesson for guys to realize you no no matter we scored three goals last game whoop you do we didn’t win the game so uh you know it’s not going to come easy every night we got to find a ways to to

Force it in the net or Force our our game on other teams and you know there’s still enough skill in our room to Win Hockey games and that’s the the reality that we have to realize you know get to is that you know we’re not going to give

In here we’re not going to just say oh here goes again no we’re going to push back and we’re going to push back right from the beginning of the game uh when I was walking into the United Center this morning for morning skate I’m going to drop a name here but

Walked in at the same time as Troy Murray the great uh color analyst on the radio and we were talking about the last game and you know hey they scored three goals last game and his first question was like yeah and how did they score those goals like this from inclose simple play

Is like I know that’s kind of been what’s been preached most of the season but you know how does that go like go from you got rewarded for those type of plays and you have a first period like that after tonight yeah I mean that’s I don’t know it’s just a

Disappointing part I I got to be honest with you I mean that’s where I made my living so I just have a hard time not understanding why we can’t get to the front of the net and understand how important those dirty goals are what’s the cliche no one ask how they ask how

Many right and then it’s just the truth like who cares how they go in the net they’re going in the net and sometimes they got to be ugly sometimes they got to be off a guy look at that tday that guy dried me nuts but he goes off his

Foot in the net like how many times that happen against us where where are those goals for us if we’re around the net if we’re shooting with purpose and looking for sticks maybe those Bank in off on in the net for us so let’s get that kind of

Mindset where it’s not the Tic-Tac toe plays those come when you have the confidence and you’ve backed teams off and now they’re opening up like I said because you have the lead and they have to try and get it back so now you have a two-on-one or a three-on-one opportunity

Or a breakway and you can make some pretty plays but until then you got to tooth and nail it you got to get to the front of the net you got to make it a nasty game and and you know kind of play chess with okay they’re pushing here

We’re pushing here and um you know that’s the mindset that our team needs to have a little bit more of and you know it’s been building like you know I was encouraged by what I saw even on the a road trip before the break and coming

Out of the break that one little a downer period against Minnesota but then boom we come right back against New York and play some really good hockey and you know it just seems like we we Fallen back into Old Habits this game which is just unacceptable I’m so glad you

Pointed out that second Vancouver goal because it’s exactly what we’re talking about here right like it doesn’t always have to be highlight real Harlem go truers on Ice sort of a goal and like do you think that part of it is the fact that the team is struggling so hard to put the

Puck in the net that maybe the thought is we have to be perfect to score like simple isn’t good enough do you think that could be maybe seeping in a little bit where just that that that desire to be perfect where you’re trying to force

That extra pass not you I mean the team is trying to force that extra pass here and there instead of just [ __ ] it just put it on the net you know yeah I I think that does come with with you know you want to make that play you see it

And you’re like oh I can make that but but you you know that right now we’re just we’re struggling we’re not connecting on those so you know as much as yes we’re NHL players and we all have the ability to make those plays it’s just not happening for us right now so

Let’s simplify it let’s make it let’s dumb it down where it’s it’s a lunch paale kind of attitude and until we really and listen I’m not knocking we have we have really good players in our team but we don’t have Elite goal scores we have Connor we we don’t have any guys

That have really put up 40 goals in a year we’ had some guys who have won Stanley Cups and things but we’re we’re not talking like we have 100 Point Getters on our team right now so let’s know who we are and and we have played

To that identity and we have played to that so that’s why tonight was just disappointing because it just felt like we were we were just not ourselves and we were just not connected we were not playing uh to the to the the Rhythm and the pace that we normally play at and it

Cost us it just allowed a Vancouver team who’s on the end of a trip maybe they’re not really feeling like they want to give it all that much and all of a sudden now we let them off the hook right and now they’re oh we’re in a game

It’s a little easy tonight uh and now they get excited about playing we let their big boys kind of jump in so those are the the the messages and the the lessons that we have to learn as a group and um you know tonight it’s just disappointing because we’re listen it’s

Been a while since we won a game it’s starting to piss me off and I’m sure a lot of guys in that room uh we’re better than that and no matter what we have in the lineup we we we should still be finding ways to Win Hockey games we’ve

Had some really close ones we got to push it over the finish line and that’s really what it comes down to as one of the leaders of this team what are the sort of things that you and guys like Jason Dickinson and Seth Jones can do to as these losses Mount and even

When you know in the G like tonight yeah throw away that first period it sucked everyone admits that but in the games where you do play well and still come up short how do you keep the young guys how do you keep their chins up how do you

Keep them committed to doing the right things what kind of message can you give them well I think it’s it’s energy right at the end of the day we’re not coming in here and down ourselves we got to figure out a way out of this so you’re

You’re I I’m always big on solution based like what are we doing to to change the course here what are we doing to get better what are we doing to to improve as a team and as individuals so that’s the mindset it’s the talk that we

Have in the room you can you know you can get negative all you want but what’s that it’s a useless emotion frustration useless emotion so it’s not going to help us get better but we have to understand who we are and what our identity is and you can’t waver on that

There’s a standard that we talk about but you know you got to stay upbeat and come into the ring tomorrow and look to get better that’s the opportunity that we have as a group here we talked about that okay we’re we’re not where we want

To be we’re growing so every day is an opportunity for the Chicago Blackhawks to get better and that’s all that we need to focus on tonight we didn’t get it done so tomorrow we get to work we get okay we Rectify what we did and

Didn’t do well and we put it into our work and our practice and then we put it into our game against Pittsburgh and show that we’ve learned from from what we happened what happened tonight you know and and a big part of it is honestly between the years I think I

Think it’s our group just being mature enough to come into a game like tonight and take over and and not look back not wait to see what the Vancouver Canucks are going to do it’s what are the Chicago Blackhawks going to do and how are they going to adjust to us and I

Think if we start getting that mindset and that confidence that’s going to what that’s what’s going to allow us to Win Hockey games focus on some of the positives from from tonight uh the special teams was a big factor tonight you know the penalty kill is really since the flip of

The calendar to 2024 been really good I believe you guys have now Perfect 10 for 10 coming out of the break killing off penalties you get a goal from the power play tonight how important is your your team that’s really struggling to score goals right now as you’re missing some

Guys how important is that special teams to really be like that equalizer and keep you in games and help you win games yeah I mean special teams is huge in in the NHL and I am really proud of our guys because I think that’s sometimes is

A point of uh where your team’s at where your mindsets at if you’re not winning special teams and or at least competing hard in those areas then sometimes it kind of gives you an idea of of the you know the attitude that your team has so

Are you taking a breath when you get a power player you digging in to find a way to score one I mean our penalty kill is dug in to to kill those penalties off we take pride in shutting down other teams top units and their guys have done

A fantastic job so you know I love seeing that and I think now more than ever though it’s it’s finding a way on the power play where with a you know a goal starve team to get some you know tonight was a good step in the right

Direction may be nice thing to get another one even in the game maybe it gives us a little Breathing Room a little life you know there’s no reason why we can score we can’t score two or three if we have opportunities you know there’s enough skill on the power play

To to get that done so it’s really important you all the great teams they they have good units and they have their special teams clicking at a good rate um our PK has done a fantastic job and I think we want to get our power play obviously up to those numbers and you

Know we’re we’re still working on it but it was obviously a step in the right direction today with with getting a goal but you know we we are you know we had there’s a lot of emphasis on it I think our coaches do a great job in the

Special Teams Department um and it’s an area that’s going to kind of keep you afloat sometimes when when your game isn’t quite where it needs to be uh earlier you said uh that Luke came in and sort of blasted you guys in the first intermission um haven’t seen a lot

Of that from him at least publicly you know is that is this one of the F few times he’s done that or has it become more of a common thing for m l no it is it’s it’s and it’s disappointing that he has to come in and tell and do that you

Know I don’t think he I think he knows when he needs to and you know I think he’s a guy that’s always stays even killed and understands that approach especially with our group and and the youth that we have but absolutely he should have came in and blasted us you

Know like that was so warranted and if it wasn’t him it was going to be myself or somebody else I’m sure in the room speaking up because that’s unacceptable it’s just not who we are it’s not the team that coach the the that Luke has coached and and

Has you know put a plan in place to have and so I love when you see that from your coach I think it’s important he’s in this with us you know all the coaches are all all the players we’re we’re trying to figure out a solution here you

Know we’re trying to move this forward um you know but and and it’s it’s important to say hey that is not the right way that is not the way we’re going to do it as the Chicago Blackhawks and um you know I love that he came in and blasted us obviously it’s

Embarrassing that our coach has to do that but it happens throughout the here and it’s a long season and sometimes you need that emotion well you’ve been you got one more no it’s we’ve been super generous with your time uh we want to end on a

Positive we saw our buddy uh today Wy City hockey he’s with us every show uh drove up from St Louis to see the Rockford game for Cory Crawford’s number retirement then drove up again from St Louis today and talked to us in a Press Box and he’s got his brand new Nick Nick

Felino Jersey and he’s got the uh the Felino hat on there too so uh you’re moving some merch man I’ve noticed quite a few more 17 Felino jerseys since you signed that uh extension people were like okay it’s safe I can go get one now I’ve been standing on Madison I’ve been standing

On Madison handing them out trying to get some people you got if you got any fat guys sizes save one me yeah we got to replace this uh we need guys that actually play on our side here we got this this 98 one let’s get a 17 over top

Of that guy there you go some that’s a pretty nice that’s I think it’s a little more warranted around here but uh that’s also awesome news about Cory Crawford good for him for getting his jersey retired in Rockford that’s pretty awesome it was cool to be there

And you could see that’s a guy you know what while you’re here I want to ask you about that cuz um that’s a guy who we feel is incredibly underappreciated throughout the hockey world as a goendale cups here if you look at the Blackhawks leaders of all time franchise

Leaders he’s right there at the top of all those categories of with an organization that has been blessed in goal as someone who played against Cory Crawford what are your thoughts on him as a goenda beat I I mean I agree with you I think he is kind of underappreciated I

Mean listen there’s so many good players on the teams the the cup years and uh but he was always a steady and a constant back there and when he was hot man it was hard to beat him I mean it’s not like you know he wasn’t he was a

Goalie that made some big saves and big moments in those runs and and those years so um and I’ve heard great things about him as a person obviously from the staff here and the guys so uh it’s yeah it’s great to see that he’s being recognized for his play and um you know

I think anyone that’s really knows hockey and knows those teams uh realizes how important he was to that uh you know franchise at the time and and those wins so uh it’s nice to see him get recognized and uh maybe you can confirm this a bit of a red ass on the ice

Sometimes uh have a couple words for the opponent now and again yeah yeah yeah he would get into it with you I love that about him I mean stand in front of him a lot of times we’d have some good battles so I love that about him but it was the

Fire that he played with and um yeah it was it was actually I I do remember a couple runin with him and uh he he competed hard man and I love that about goalie sometimes yeah he’s got that he’s got that intensity about him for sure

  1. When he eventually retires, I hope the Blackhawks offer him a position in the organization. I also could see him becoming a coach at some point if he wanted to.

  2. Well…..looks like Kyle has made some wrong choices so far. One can only hope some of the younger kids that have yet to be here are the players we need. I feel for guys like Foligno who come to play every day.

  3. I am sick of all the so called hoopla, wait till this guy comes up,or this guy,and that guy, well it’s 2 years or more, these guys, are not very good, and all the talk is just that talk, one shot on goal, come on,they stink, face it,woulda coulda shoulda!Talent,is not in the hawks criteria!
