GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Islanders (02.20.24) | Karlsson is 9th Fastest Defenseman to 800 Points

Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the New York Islanders. The game started with a back-and-forth style play up and down the ice. Looking for the first goal of the night, Erik Karlsson took a shot on the net from a low angle, Rickard Rakell collected the puck below the goal line in the offensive zone. Picking his head up, he saw Marcus Pettersson on the far dot with no one covering him. Pettersson let it rip, and while he didn’t get everything on the shot, the knuckle puck trickled past the Islanders goaltender to take the first lead of the night. With that assist in his 973rd career game, Karlsson has become the ninth-fastest defenseman in NHL history to record 800 career points. But the celebration was short-lived. The Islanders scored three goals in the 2nd by Brock Nelson, Mathew Barzal, and Simon Holmstrom. Late in the period, Chad Ruhwedel walked the puck along the blue line drawing the Islander with him. Ruhwedel dished the puck back to Lars Eller. Reilly Smith was in front of the net screening the goalie. Eller shot the puck on net and cut the Islander lead in half to one goal. Mike Reilly scored mid-way through the 3rd to take a two-goal lead for the Islanders. But the Penguins were not done yet. Eller and Valtteri Puustinen were posted in front of the net. Wacking away at the loose puck, Puustinen was able to bounce it in the net for the Penguin’s third goal of the night. Quickly following, Drew O’Connor threw the puck toward the front of the net where it bounced off an Islander skate and past the New York goaltender to even the game at four goals aside. The regular 60 minutes of play was not enough to decide a winner, extra time was needed. After less than a minute of overtime was played, the Islanders Adam Pelech scored the game-winning goal. New York won 5-4.

  1. Careless mistakes, bad player deployment leads to yet another loss. This team is closer to the golf course than the playoffs at this point.

  2. This team is absolutely atrocious! And damn near season on the line and you don't start crosby or malkin in OT? The one time I agree we need to have Sullivan on the hot seat! Absolutely disgusting last 5 games.

  3. Idk who this organization lets this go, night after night, you know how you know when your team isn’t good? When you can repeatedly look at a game & say “pick a problem”, PP, poor choices by the guy that makes more than sid, soft goals……its just sad

  4. That last goal was the Penguins season encapsulated. Vancouver Born lifetime Pens fan here I think this core Pens team has 1more cup in em

  5. It doesn’t matter who starts in what period. These goalies stink. They lose almost every simple 1-1 shot they face. We got rid of an all time great for this. Serves us right.

  6. Islanders have a solid team BUT fail to bring home the cup They have to win the cup SOON or the time window will close fast

  7. Let's just miss the playoffs when Sids playing his best season in a few.. maybe his best b4 he's done too.. makes me sick all the breakdown goals against. Good night all you sore losers like me.. 👍

  8. Letang turned into a statue while Pelech skated down the middle for the game-winner. Had Karlsson done that, Bourque would have been all over him. Not his buddy Kris, though. Hate the way the Ol' Two-Niner plays favorites.
