Leafs Wake and Take the W | Leafs Talk

The Toronto Maple Leafs take down the St. Louis Blues in a 4-2 matinee on Family Day. JD Bunkis and Sam McKee are in-studio to break down the win – another slow start, how much meaning is put into wins against middling teams, Tavares’ reduced role and the pressure on Bertuzzi. Then, a bigger picture perspective of the team, whether Marner is underrated in the Toronto market, Matthews’ hunt for 70 and Samsonov’s impressive numbers since his return.

  1. Guys talking about Matthews getting sat on the hunt for 70 like the Leaf's didnt take Marner out of the lineup 2 years in a row when he was chasing 100. The org will shut down Matthews in almost every scenario that isn't maaaaybe 69 goals because it's a serious accomplish for the org at that point. They arn't going to play him 2-3 extra games to let him chase 2-3 goals and risk injury.

  2. Matthew Knies is currently in 10th place among NHL rookie point-scorers, for the 2023-2024 season.

However, of these top 10 rookie point-scorers, Matthew Knies leads them all (1st place) in hits; with 113, this season. In 2nd place (a distant 2nd) for hits- among top 10 rookie point-scorers- is Adam Fantilli, with only 63.

Some factors- in terms of a player's value to their team- cannot be measured on the point-scoring sheet, alone. While being 'up there' among the best NHL rookie point-scorers, this season; Matthew Knies is far and away the best/leader in hits, of them.

Matthew Knies for NHL's Calder Trophy (rookie of the year), in 2023-2024 !!!

  3. Er, Marner is just not as glamorous as Matthews or Nylander. Can you imagine Marner going on post-game with his shirt off? The hockey intelligentsia like his playmaking, though. Is he like a "Rover," which used to be a position in the early era? I don't know.

  4. The wild, bruins, jets and Philly have all given the panthers problems multiple times this season. Would be interesting to find the common denominator where they’re having success

  5. What are you guys talking about with the Leafs beating dogs on this stretch? They are 8-2 in their last 10 games with 2 wins over the Jets, 1 win over Dallas, 2 wins over the Blues, 1 win over the Flyers, 1 win over Seattle, and a win over the Ducks who are THE ONLY DOG TEAM IN THE WIN COLUME. The Leafs 2 losses were to dogs, the Sens and the NYI.

  6. I like the studio setup, don’t love the arrangement. Sammy facing almost directly towards JD, and then JD angled away from Sammy and almost whole time looking complete opposite way.

Just feels a little uncomfortable to watch. Either have both guys face the camera or be slightly tilted towards each other. Just my thoughts, always watch and love the show! 💙

  7. I’d disagree this is the worst Leafs team around Matthews since the rookie year.

Those teams for the first few years were pretty porous on forward, defence, and goaltending. Definitely looked like this could be a tire fire at the start to the season, and the team still lacks a defined identity I agree, but there is skill and toughness throughout the lineup, and rookies and call ups have been playing pretty solid.

It’s a weird and disappointing team at times, but I’d say far from the worst Matthews has seen. Also we just continue to have higher expectations each year, so the team will always be judged more harshly than the earlier renditions with Papi. I’d honestly say I enjoy watching this version more than most of the past years. It’s been very frustrating at times, but it always is with the Leafs, that’s what we expect. This group seems like it has the passion and they’re a fun group to root for. Love my Leafs and the Leafs talk community 💙

  8. Marner is 14th in the NHL in Assists/Game playing with a guy who is shooting out the lights.

  9. Also, you said the Leafs move back into the top 10 in the league. That is false, they were 11th and are still 11th. They are on the bottom end of the main group though if they can keep up this momentum and find a way to suspend Reilly again. 17-2-1 without Reilly.

    1. Vancouver .702
    2. Florida .691
    3. Boston .688
    4. NYR .682
    5. Dallas .679
    6. Winnipeg .670
    7. Carolina .645
    8. Edmonton .644
    9. Colorado .643
    10. Las Vegas .636

    11. Toronto .630
    12. LA .604
    13. Detroit .582
    14. Philadelphia .580

  10. Sammy sounded like an unhinged fan discussing Samsonov when he was struggling. Samsonov was always a good goalie. It has always been about the defence. And it still is.

  11. When they play the bottom lines more it’s better for everyone
    Top guys get a break
The other guys get into the game and more involved.
    Proof is in the pudding
Look at the record when a guy or 2 are out they play better.

  12. I don’t know what it is about Bertuzzi that makes me never want to criticize him. I think it’s because he is still doing good things on the ice. He’s making great plays, he’s still hanging in the most contested patches of ice. When a guy is doing what he’s trying to do, yet simply not putting the puck in, it’s like you sort of know it’s only a matter of time.

  13. There is no version of reality where Toronto beats Florida, over seven games… if you did somehow manage to win the East, then you're gonna have to beat Colorado or Vegas 🤷‍♀

  14. Are these guys serious about marner!? What games are you watching? He is the king of 3rd assists. He hasn’t set up Mathews in a long time. Let’s drop this nonsense about him being under appreciated. It’s a joke

  15. We gotta stop saying Bert is cursed. I want this guy to succeed here but man, Buddy couldn't score in a brothel.
