Per the comments, the big hurdle with Markstrom is how much salary Calgary should retain and what that’ll cost us in assets. We’re also still actively asking about Gibson, Saros, and Jake Allen.

Saros is the only answer. If the devils are going to give up a blue chip, they have to get a goalie with longevity that matches the roster.

I get the reservations on Markstrom re: age and salary but if Hanafin is included in this there won’t be many packages from our end that I’d say no to.

If we give up Holtz or Dawson for Markstrom in any capacity I’ll be furious. I’m not interested in giving anything major up this season, if we make a run that’s great, if not it wasn’t worth losing that much.

I’d give up Holtz if Hanifin were part of the deal. Wouldn’t hesitate.

I would like to politely but firmly ask the rumor mill to leave us alone

It’s at the point even if it gets done, it might actually be too late to salvage the season. Devils would need to rely on luck and other teams losing out at this point in addition to playing well, and the Devils haven’t had good luck this year

It’s so strange to see everyone so aggressively against acquiring a player that could clearly help us. No, he isn’t 25 years old, but good luck finding a proven high-end goalie in their mid-20s that’s available in the first place. Those guys get signed and become cornerstones of their teams. Marky is signed for another two seasons; that is *way* more than just a stop gap. Even if you think we’re not going to win this year, this is a move for the next two years as well.

    So what is it?

Are people worried he’s going to decline? It’s known at this point that goalies age far better than skaters. There’s no reason — aside from just general fear/paranoia — to believe this guy will fall off a cliff. He’s top 5 in goals saved above expected this year behind a much less talented team than ours.

Do we just have PTSD about the other older goalies we’ve signed in the past that haven’t worked out? I get that, but none of those situations really apply here. Bernier didn’t have nearly the pedigree Markstrom does. Crawford randomly retired (and per the Athletic article that came out recently, it seems like it was at least partially because he was basically addicted to pain killers).

Do people just truly think a goalie upgrade won’t help? Even if you believe the defense is a bigger problem, you don’t have to look far to see how much value an high-end goalie can add to your team; someone who can steal games when you really need it. We would absolutely still see benefits of a better goalie behind this team.

I want us to have an established, home-grown, cost-controlled elite goalie too, but if you’re betting the farm on 2 games of Nico Daws, you’re way too caught in the moment here. Remember how everyone had knighted Schmid as the goalie of the future after half a playoff series? I love these guys and enjoy watching them play well, but a guy like Markstrom is another level than we’ve seen in a while.

It’s just very strange to me to see fans with poor goalie play be presented with “here’s potentially 2.5 years of high-end/elite goalie play” and have them respond so defiantly, “no thanks.”

This team is no longer “2 years away”. You can see how talented they are when healthy, how good they look when they get good goaltending. Don’t pretend otherwise, the window isn’t just in the future, it’s now *and* in the future. You shouldn’t waste possible championship years because you’re afraid Holtz might score 30 goals in 2027. Our top-end skaters are basically set for the next 5 years. We will have time to keep building the auxiliary pieces in other ways, but there is *no* substitute for good goaltending and we will achieve nothing without it.

This isn’t the answer. The new system is still working. Daws is playing great. VV played great in his only game so far. I’m sure Schmid will do well when he gets his chance. The change has solved the defense vs goaltending argument handily, especially as the system continues to hold up as d-men coming back from injury are slotted back in

Mercer has proven himself to be integral to the team. Holtz is young and has great potential. Toffoli is our leading scorer. The team is young and has a bright future. Like I said yesterday in another thread, we’re not in “win now” mode and don’t need to mortgage our future for short term success

Making a big move now just because we found our footing would be foolish. The biggest and most glaring problem is why it took 50 games to make any real adjustments

I absolutely understand peoples hesitancy about this trade but I’m curious. What everyone’s preferences to “dealing with it over the offseason”? Is it ride Daws? Make a trade after the season (maybe the price will be lower). Genuinely curious because there’s not a huge slate of quality UFA goalies about to hit the market
