I see Columbus in the same vein as other recent expansion teams like Ottawa and to a lesser extent, Minnesota. They have all been around long enough to be better than they have been. A few flashes of light, here and there, but generally disappointing. I don't think Columbus is a bad hockey market by any means. The fans have been exceptionally patient. I was sorry when Jarmo left the Blues and I am saddened to see him lose his job, though I suppose it was somewhat inevitable.
Without him, the jackets would have been worse he did a good job with prospects but veterans who didn't mesh well
For everyone saying JD should be fired too, the team was on the right track when he left for NY. Jarmo made some big mistakes while he was gone. I don’t think JD is the problem.
Overdue imo.
Love the old red jersey . Classic
I heard Jim Benning is available
Don’t ever say Gaudreau went to Columbus to challenge himself. He went there to hide and retire. No pressure to win in Columbus. He took less to hide. He is soft in the playoffs!!!!
Just like how did he even last this long honestly
I hate retools but in this specific case, they need a retool.
They need a detail oriented coach like tocchet. They also need to add some veterans to the room. Likely up front to be mentors to the kids.
So yeah first move is to find the right coach.
Go after 2 goalies
Bout time. They have underperformed massively this year.
Nobody wants to play for Tortorella it had nothing to do with Columbus. Hayes was the flyers leading scorer and all star but torts benched and scratched him till he wanted out. Torts doesn't care if you have talent he wants you to grind, and if you don't, he makes your life miserable till you leave
CBJ need more than anything a good coach and system in place for the players they have currently. Hiring Brad Larsen after Torts seemed a bit like "we didn't find anyone we liked, so let's reward a good guy in our org" Problem is, Larsen was a terrible coach. Team exceeded expectations the first year but fell to earth hard the second. Criticism of his lack of holding players accountable and having "no plan" in practices didn't help either. He essentially destroyed all good habits and culture in his two years.
The front office recognizes a change is needed goes for the incredibly risky gamble of Babcock which backfires and they again, out of pure desperation, bring in another first time head coach who was a part of Larsens staff. Habits, culture, and system remain subpar and might even be worse. It was the exact opposite thing the team needed.
The Jackets have a lot of talent and a loaded farm system. What they don't have is good coaching and system. The next coach hire needs to be a good one or we are in right back at the starting line of another rebuild.
Build around Fantilli. Blow the team up. Try and get as many 1st and 2nd round picks as you can. And try to accelerate the rebuild. But do it properly this time.
Cannot believe he lasted as long as he did. The Babs situation should have been the final straw, a long with seeing the return he got for Dubois, vs the return Chevy got this past offseason.
The fact he thought Babs was the solution to solve any culture issues keeping this team down was, and is laughable. Cannot believe he was allowed to stick around after that…
CBJ has been one of the worst franchises in pro sports.
Bobrovsky, Duchene, and Panarin leaving wasn't as bad as the bullshit narrative around it. CBJ didn't try to keep Bob because he asked for $10m/yr. Outside of a very brief glimmer in the playoffs last season, he's been a boat-anchor for Florida. Duchene and Panarin both wanted to be exactly one place, not just trying to leave CBJ. Everything I heard was the only one CBJ even really tried to retain was Panarin.
What has been painful has been this anti-fan narrative from hateful folks who just want to kick a team when they're down.
The new GMs first move should be to bring Jiricek up permanently and stop pissing off your former first round pick by letting him play in the minors while your current defensive structure is god awful
I would do a long term build. Try to get rid of some of the bigger contracts and bring in some picks and prospects because this team as far as I am concerned has never been in contention. The most playoff success they ever had was sweeping Tampa one year and getting to the 2nd round and also another season they knocked out the Leafs as well but they’ve never been past the 2nd round. I think if this team really is serious about getting better then there is no quick fix. It’s going to take time.
The rumors that nobody wanted to play in Columbus started with I believe Jack Johnson and Jeff Carter if I remember correctly.
One playoff round win in 11 years, not impressive and writing was on the wall for Jarmo with the Babcock fiasco. The success in Jarmo tenure all happened when Tortorella was the coach. Gaudreau fell into their lap since his main requirement in free agency was ABC (anywhere but Canada), not a good indicator it’s where players want to go. Once Gaudreau realized he didn’t have as many suitors as expected he settled for Columbus.
The Severson contract and Babcock hiring did him in.
CBJ have a few really good young players that will be ready next year. A few will be on defense. If you couple those with the very young core of the russian forwards, Fantilli, Sillinger, Johnson, etc. and they have the talent.
Wow…thought they’d never get rid of that guy. Wish I’d as many chances in life as he got running that clown-show organization.
