How did the NHL come to the decision to suspend Rielly for 5 games? | 7-Eleven That’s Hockey

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety handed down a five-game suspension to Morgan Rielly for his cross-check on Sens forward Ridly Greig. That’s Hockey host Gino Reda explains the league’s reason for deciding five games was the right number and why the suspension may ultimately cost the Leafs a first round pick.

  1. I think the 5 games is not enough for an international cross check to the head. The rest of the team have to pickup the slack and if they can’t do that then they don’t deserve to be in the playoffs..imo

  2. It should've been 8 games plus a psychiatric evaluation to see if Reilly is mentally stable enough to remain in the league. Ditto for anyone else who has a tantrum and tries to seriously injure someone.

  3. The color of the sweater he wears duh, I wanna see a 2 hand stick to the face of mathews next time he scores a goal and see how many dozen games they get.

  4. As much as I hate seeing a year of Matthews wasted Treliving has failed to do anything to make the blue line better and unless it's a defenceman with term or a sign and trade it's not worth a first.

  5. Once again the league proves they don’t have a clue. Mark Scheifele got 4 games in the playoffs for a similar play. Only difference he didn’t cross check him in the face. He blew a guy up after an empty netter shoulder first then hit his head. What a joke

  6. Should have got the same punishment as Dale Hunter for his after whistle hit on Pierre Turgeon. This is the same crap and could have ruined a man's life. Sooooooooooooo sick of after the whistle stuff like this.

  7. Not a hockey play? What a load of baloney. The department of player safety is not just wrong, they’re 100% wrong. If there is no respect for playing the right way, with respect for the opposing team, then you’ll eventually get down league crap like the handshake fiasco down east.

  8. Shame that Reaves and Keefe didn't get fined for endorsing Reilly's actions that ended up being a suspension.

  9. I'd have given him a dozen. How many did Hunter get?
There's no place for poor sportsmanship in professional sport.

  10. Well, after Cousins, Bennet, Trouba, Gryzcelk it is clear that he shouldn't get a fine.

But the NHL is a joke.

  11. All the biased maple grief TV announcers say 5 games is too much. Who gives a $hit how he put the puck in the net! Reilly is a pussy for not dropping his gloves and a massive douche bag for cross checking the guy to the head. Bullocks to TSN and Sportsnet announcers!

  12. 5 games is a joke. The National Hockey Leafs always get preferential treatment from the league. Should have sent a message to the league that plays like this have no place in hockey and made an example of him. Instead they give him a slap on the wrist and send a message to the league that this is ok to do and you will only get a few games for coming inches from seriously hurting a player and possibly ending his career. For shame NHL.

  13. They won their first game with him out. They'll be fine for 4 more games. Relax. They don't win every game because of Reilly.

  14. Shouldn’t Perron gotten 5 instead of dog 6 for the same reason? Or Rielly get 6 to be the same as Perron. Both never had a suspension or fined in their history.

  15. I used to play so keep this in mind. This was a hit not influenced by the fast nature of actually playing the game so I think the penalty discipline should have been far longer.

  16. For once the DoPS gets it right. Hope this set's a precedent and players learn to respect each other's right not to get crosschecked to the face for scoring a goal.

  17. The Leafs were an average team before Rielly f*cked everything up, now… they're finished. What you gonna do, knock out Florida and Boston… yeah right! You might as well start considering when to sell Matthews 🤣

  18. I'm cool with 5. The Leafs need to learn a lesson about how to be tough and when to be tough!

  19. Why did Rielly attended an in person meeting (meant for a suspension greater than 5 games) when in the end he only got a 5-game suspension? Did Rielly’s explanation that he didn’t intend to cross-check Greig mitigate his action resulting in 5 rather than 6 games?
