Things coming up now I do want to talk Super Bowl for a couple of minutes before we get to Brandon Lang I am fascinated by Patrick Mahomes I think you know that I hate the Chiefs I grew up as an AFC West fan the Chiefs
Are an enemy of the Denver Broncos so I always root against them but Patrick Mahomes is so great at playing quarterback and he’s like John Elway in my eyes so I respect him and I like to watch him play I’ve got nothing but respect for Patrick Mahomes I’ve got
Nothing but respect for Andy Reid two of the very best at what they do but I think Patrick Mahomes is now sliding into this rarified air and I’ve talked about this before but what happens with quarterbacks the elite ones I’ve seen this with John Elway I saw it
With Jim Kelly Dan Marino Steve Young Joe Montana what happens is when they first enter the league and I’ll use Elway as an example because I think his game matches up the closest with Patrick Mahomes based on arm strength athleticism the scrambling ability the way in which he plays the game laway was
The same way when laway first came in the league he relied on his athleticism and arm strength to carry him in his early years and he was tremendous he won an NFL MVP but he wasn’t a full-fledged quarterback yet he didn’t trust his protection he wouldn’t sit in the pocket
When he needed to and he wouldn’t really rely on his mind and his eyes and the manipulation of the game the little nuances of playing quarterback early in his career But as time went on and he got to work with different offensive coaches Jim fossil who was a great offensive mind who was
At Stanford and then jumped to the NFL actually coached the New York Giants to a Super Bowl and then he got to work with Mike Shanahan and what happened is Elway continued on his career he entered into this realm that all the great quarterbacks they want to get there and
That’s where you’ve been in a league long enough where you have the experience to understand the nuances of the offense that you run you also have an understanding of what defenses are doing how to read defenses how to manipulate defenses and you understand protections and the way they’re trying to shut you
Down you basically see everything from a different angle because because the game has slowed down you’re playing chess you enter this realm where you’re playing chess and you’re manipulating things with your mind and your eyes with the little nuances of playing quarterback but here’s the key you’re not so far
Advanced in your career that you’ve lost all of your physical attributes and when Elway finally got the coaching and the game slowed down and he began to embrace being a quarterback he was manipulating the game from the pocket and you using his experience and his mind to manipulate
Defenses but when plays would break down and he had to use his athleticism his legs his scrambling ability and take advantage of the defense he could do that and gouge teams on third down he could pick up first downs with his legs he could scramble around and buy time to
Let things open up so he was a quarterback first and then relied on the athleticism instead of the other way around and that’s the beauty of being a quarterback when you enter that realm where your mind is synced up with the game you understand defenses you understand the offense you know where
Your guys are going to be you can direct them and you’re able to stand in the pocket and deliver the football on time and on target but physically you can still do all the things that make you a special athlete and you can gouge defenses that way and that’s where
Patrick Mahomes is at right now the game is slowing down he’s seeing things from a different angle he’s playing chess making good decisions and when he has to he can rely on his legs on his athleticism on the different arm angles the scrambling ability picking up first
Downs on the move but he doesn’t make that his top priority because he’s a true quarterback now and that’s the beauty of being in the game having your physical tools but having the experience to see the game From a Different Light Steve Young went through that John Elway
Went through that we’re seeing it now with Patrick Mahomes which makes him a lethal weapon and that’s why I respect what he’s done this year because he understood throughout the season even though it was really frustrating because his receivers couldn’t hold on to the ball and Travis Kelce had lost the step
So as the season went along and he continued to show patience to be a good teammate and a leader for the young players who are trying to learn the offense and learn how to hold on to the football he started to dial it back and be okay with the dump
Pass okay with taking a zck are throwing the ball away on a third down realizing that hey we got a good defense I can live to fight another down and look at what he’s done in the postseason hasn’t made a big mistake hasn’t thrown an interception and he’s doing what is
Necessary with the tools that his team has to win games not worrying about numbers not worrying about touchdowns just saying what do I need to do and how do I need to play to put my team in the best position to win and when you reach that point as a quarterback where
Winning is your number one priority and you’re willing to take on whatever role is necessary to make that happen you become dangerous and that’s what I respect about Patrick Mahomes you can hate on a team and the fan base but still have mad respect for the player and I think Patrick Mahomes
Is dialed in and I’ll tell you what if the 49ers are going to have this routine of getting off out of the block slow like we saw against the Packers and the Lions Mahomes is going to kill them so just something to keep in mind Patrick Mahomes is now entering into a rarified
Air where the game is slowed down he understands everything mentally he can manipulate the game with his eyes with his mind he can play from the pocket but when things break down he’s still got the Mad athleticism to make things happen and that’s a great quarterback he’s awesome he truly is awesome and
It’s going to be fun to watch him on this stage once again because every year and every team’s got a different identity and what they do and what they’re about and this Chiefs team is not the explosive come from behind high-scoring offense we’ve seen in the past they’re more of a ball

Public is infatuated with the weapons of the 49ers and Vegas is like listen if we make the Niners a favorite we’re not going to get beat up here we’re not and and that’s why the the the chiefs were a dog in Buffalo they should have been
Laying two and a half in Buffalo Buffalo had a defense that was just banged up six starters missing the Ravens line was legit three and a half four four and a half number one defense in the NFL it should have been undefeated on the season all you four their loss the last
Loss they did Maddox didn’t play the starter but the other three losses they LED in the fourth quarter um just Lamar Jackson had the worst game of his career bottom line so with that being said they were a dog against Buffalo they were dog against Ravens why not make him a dog

Teams like the Bucks who are terrible at defending players driving to the basket that’s true but you got to start somewhere and realistically at the beginning of the Season he was getting eight points and six turnovers against teams like that so it’s fantastic uh I he’s finished a little better he’s
Absolutely gotten to the line which is critical for him because he has the physique to uh absorb contact and that’s going to be the secret sauce for him and his scoring I you know he he’ll develop a perimeter shot but I don’t think he’ll ever be a dead eyee shooter but if he

Like uh clear moment where you understand what the Blazers see in scoot now scoot’s ability to actually make a pass has never been in question his ability to complete a pass has been the problem but I think he’s seeing the court better and also since he’s become
A little more of an off offensive threat he’s developed some separation between him and the defender who now have to worry about him scoring and that’s opened up the passing Lanes a little bit more for him and you’re starting to see some of the fruits of that you know one
Thing I was going to ask you where do you come out on how much a guy can improve his shooting as he enters the NBA and continues on throughout his career because we all know about the shooting numbers and the poor three-point percentage in the G League
Where do you come out on that and how much a guy can improve his shot well it’s already gotten better I mean he he drifted up above 30% and he started the season at 0.87 so he is developing it as we watch the other thing that you look for is his
Misses more and more are online but short or long yes at the beginning of the Season he was missing left right he’s hitting the backboard nowhere near the rim so you’re already seeing him develop some of that and the three-point shot is a skill that can be developed
Now again I don’t think he’ll ever be Ray Allen he’s never going to be natural at that but he doesn’t have to be just enough of a threat to make the defender respect him coming off of pick and rolls or guarding him one-on-one so the defender has to get close enough to

As you say there’s no reason for them to make a move right now in order to make a trade tomorrow they would have to believe that that trade is either something they’ve wanted for a while or is the best offer they’re going to get in the next calendar year under those
Circumstances sure they would pull the trigger but can you really anticipate that the trade deadline possibilities for a player like Brogden are going to be greater than this Summer’s possibilities when a lot more teams are in the trade market and there’s a lot more action going on I mean just look at
The players who have not just historically been traded at the deadline but also just today I mean if you’re excited about Shake Milton more power to you but that’s the kind of player that’s being moved right now and second round picks the Blazers are going to want more
Than that from brogon and if they’re not going to get it why not have him Mentor steeve Henderson longer produce 20 points a game be uh uh support to coach Philips why wouldn’t you do that for the remainder of the season and then look to move him this summer when 30 teams are
Making moves and offers instead of three you know someone brought this point up to me a couple days ago and I don’t really know the answer to it so I’ll ask you do you lose any value in Brogden by moving him during the summer with one
Year left on his deal compared to now when he’s got a year plus that depends on who receives him I mean if it’s a team like Miami who wants to turn their season around now they might pay a premium to get him right now instead of this summer and they might
Look other directions if they go into the Summer with the current roster and you know need a general backup point guard they they have a a bigger choice so a team like that you might get extra now but for the average NBA team there’s
Not going to be much of a loss in value at all it’s the same amount of contract in the final year the only question is whether a team needs for a playoff run now again the teams that can forecast Malcolm brogon making a difference for them right now to their Fortunes in
2024 is a small subset some player or some teams in the middle or the top of the bracket right but there are a lot more teams over the summer who are going to speculate we’re GNA be good next year we could really use a guy like this so
Not only do you have the teams that used to want him you have a whole another third of the league who goes yeah that might be a sensible move and that will create more competition and maybe a better offer so I would say there’s a chance that you lose value but that
Chance is pretty small for most of the league it the offers will be just as good if not better so Dave help me with this process like I totally understand what the Trailblazers are trying to do right now they’re in year one of a rebuild so as they close out this season
And move into the offseason like what are the objectives what is the next step what are they trying to accomplish well I mean developing their young players is obviously number one yes they’ve got to ascertain what they have right that also informs what they do in the draft or whether they make some
Moves this summer so that’s the the first priority second priority what does this year’s draft look like and what do those picks look like do you want to execute all of them Blazers have what three it’s unlikely in this draft they’re going to want to keep all three
So what do you want to trade for who’s your target for for the draft trades so that you can maybe use your own lottery pick but maybe move those others and get someone else you’d like uh I don’t think it’s going to be a big free agency
Summer I don’t think that there’s much mystery around Jeremy Grant I suppose the other question mark is well what do you do with DeAndre Aton and I’m I’d be surprised if they move him this Summer but he’s kind of taking an exam with the Blazers and it’s probably about two
Years so figuring out how much Aon how much you can build your team around how much he can score can he defend those questions remain to be answered fully and I think that is also a priority what do you think about aon’s play he’s been really productive the last seven games
What do you make of this Resurgence since he came back from about a month off with the injury with the KNE tended nights I mean that’s part of it maybe he feels better but frankly when you go to him he plays better I mean he’s just
That kind of player so if the Blazers are willing to Center their offense around him and make him a key cog I think he will do well for them if he’s the fourth option that’s not going to be quite as good so you have to decide is
