The lengths we go to to watch our sport…

Starting last year, this season, my friends and I have made it a thing to meet up at BAR to hangout and watch the game. They have a huge projector that they roll down to show the game on, got game time drink specials, their queso dip is incredible, and they have a full comfy lounge to chill out in. It’s honestly a great place to watch the game. There’s no real rhyme or reason to which games we choose, but this one was a must do because, well, fuck the Oilers. So, anyways, we arrive at BAR last night right at 7pm, and the hostess that usually serves us immediately informed us that the game was being hosted only on Hulu and some ESPN stream that they didn’t have access to. We were crestfallen. This is a big game! We HAVE to watch this game. The hostess understands our dismay, and suggests that we call around to other bars to see if they could get the game. There so happens to be a Distill right down the street, so I give them a call. The bartender told me they had it, and were pulling it up at that instant.

We rejoice! The Knight is saved. We all pile in to our cars are head off to Distill. If we hurry, we’ll only miss a couple minutes of the first. But alas, it was not to be. We arrive at Distill, and the bartender told us that they couldn’t seem to get the stream to work. BUT they have a TV, just one, with Hulu on it, so she was trying to get it on that. Sadly she couldn’t get it to work. No matter what she tried if just refused to load the stream. So she gave us the remote to the TV and said, well, if you guys can make it work and get it to show up on this TV, then it’s all ours for the night. Her only request was nothing illegal. We didn’t want to leave, and we figured if 2 of the most popular Vegas bars couldn’t get the game, then it was unlikely any of the others could, too. So we decide to stay and give it a shot.

We try everything. We try logging in with our own Hulu accounts to the TV, but we keep getting errors about being out of region or not home location or some shit. We can all get both Hulu and ESPN on our phones, but we can’t get it up on the TV. So we try broadcasting to the TV from our phones, but it’s locked out on the TV to only allow audio. We don’t have a hardline to connect to the TV, so no go there. It was looking pretty grim. The security on the TV was setup to prevent exactly this situation. We’re about to give up and head home when, by some miracle, I manage to break through the security lockout on the TV and thus allow me to screenshare from my phone to the TV. It may have worked because it was a Samsung TV, and I had the only Samsung phone. I don’t know. I don’t care. We cheer. We all cheer. We’ve missed the first 15min of the first period, but WE GOT IT. It was grainy, only like 144 or 260p, could barely hear it, but WE HAD IT. The Knight had been saved!

Through the whole course of the game we had 4 or 5 other people come in to the bar and exclaim “OMG YOU GOT THE GAME! HOW?! I’ve been to like 4 bars, and no one else has it!” To which we regale them with the story of our technological prowess to get the game to work. To which we are met with laughter and cheering. So our group of 4 became like 9 all watching this one like 42″ TV with the resolution so bad we could barely see the puck, and could barely see jersey numbers at some points. But it didn’t matter. We drank and had a great time watching the Oilers get spanked.

And that is the tale of how I used my powers of technology manipulation for the good of the realm, and saved the Knight for everyone (okay, only 9 people, but it still counts!). Go KNIGHTS Go!
