Ian Mendes On Why Any Claude Giroux Trade Rumour Is Ridiculous + Downtown Arena Options

Always a treat to catch up with Mr. Ian Mendes!

Ross Levitan and Brandon Piller are joined by the Senior Writer with The Athletic for part one of their conversation, discussing where the Sens next arena could be, why Claude Giroux is NOT getting traded, and what Ian learned from getting to spend time with Sens owner Michael Andlauer in Montreal a couple weeks ago.

  1. @ Ian Mendes didn’t you do a piece on Tim stuzle at his home with his family when you travelled down there around the same time you interviewed Ryan Renaylds, When is that coming out?

  2. These other people are just trying to upset the team. They dont care about the team, they are doing this to try and make your team fail.I have seen quite a bit of stuff on You Tube ,like a Chychrun trade. You just got him a little while ago.If I put anything on here its to try to help the team, and the players. Not all players fit, even if they are elite. Its team chemistry.
Norris is an American player, wouldnt it be easier for him to see his family if he was on an American team.Chicago would be a team he would like to play for.Norris and Bedard as the top centers on Chicago would really help them.Chicago could be a solid trade partner, and so could Arizona, weather arizona is moved or not.

  3. The arena at LeBreton represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to finally breaks the psychological line there seems to be between Gatineau and Ottawa and crossing over the bridge. Gatineau is looking to revamp its downtown also. That whole area could become a big hub with both helping each other out. Downtown Gatineau would become more attractive for businesses (restaurants, shops and whatnot, places to hang out before and after games) and would make the Senators much more accessible to Gatineau, a relatively untapped market of 285,000 people. Hope they’re talking 🤝

  4. Guys, with the arena debate, while I'm happy it's basically now down to what central location would be best (and the answer is Lebreton), I find it really frustrating that DND still gets thrown around as an option. Yeah, it would be an amazing location. I would love it, IF it were an actual option. It's not. Go talk to anyone who works there, or in the DND sphere. The absolute earliest it could be available is 2035, and even that's a generous timeline. And that's if DND wanted to move out of there. They don't. They've got Billions in infrastructure invested in there. We're looking at decades. I guess if we're gonna throw alternatives to Lebreton into the conversation, they need to be actually viable. Is the land actually available? Is it big enough for an arena? Then we can get into the merits of the site as opposed to Lebreton. Right now, DND, and pretty much any other potential "downtown" site being floated just seems like a waste of breath that distracting from the goal of a central arena.

  5. In our last lose to Toronto I was on the bus from the Glebe Central Pub with the great Ross Levitan. On the way to the game it was incredible. Ross was killing Leafs fans with his overwhelming knowledge of the game. On the way home when the Leafs fans started singing "Real teams play in the city" even Ross was silenced. WE NEED A STADIUM IN THE CITY!!!!!

  6. I'm in Orleans…work downtown. I go to about 8-10 games each year & don't mind the commute (it's basically 1 road for me). It would take longer to (somehow) get to Lebreton Flats. Bank St is a mess with 67's games (6K fans). Ian is right – Ottawa is a car city.

  7. I like Ian’s comment about Ottawa being a car-centric city. And that he would love it to be a non-car-centric city.
