[Dreger] The Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames have been informed they will receive cap relief for the players on Leave charged in the 2018 World Junior criminal proceedings.

Not that I expect the Flyers to *need* that extra cap relief, but could be worth noting depending on if they decide to take a cap dump or something of a similar nature come TDL time

  1. This can help at the deadline, they can now take on s crappy contract and acquire assets for taking said contract on.

Do we really need a goalie this year? Idk wat out there right now or after this season.

They also could still potentially use Ellis’ LTIR space. If they were an intermediary and brought in a person with a cap hit between about $4.5-5.5 they would reach the cap limit, be able to maximize Ellis’ LTIR space. They would have over $10 mil in cap space for this season, there is no way they could use it all this season, but it would be in their best interest to be a broker for teams.Ā

One interesting thing. If the Flyers were to bring in Merzlikins ($5.4 cap hit) they could do this as well, bringing in that cap hit would actually allow them to increase their cap space this season. You may say Merzlikins is sign beyond this season, but his and Ellis’ contract are the same length. The cap is going up next season and not having to re-sign Hart means even more expected money is coming off the books. The Flyers wont be a cap team next year, not likely for the next few years, having Merzlikins big contract would help them get closer to the cap ceiling and able to maximize more of Ellis’ LTIR space.Ā

We also get cap relief by not having to re-sign Hart to a big contract in the offseason.
