  1. The ultimate lightning in a bottle team, had one great season where they won the cup and the rest was constant disappointment, now that their window is closing I'm not sure what their future will be

  2. They can rebuild while keeping fans happy seeing ovi score. Rare scenario imo being able to rebuild while keeping fans interested. No fans are gonna stop watching with ovi closing in on wayne and they can reubild at the same time

  4. I'd rather see a year or two in the wilderness, with a long-term contender as the result, than a decade or two of being one piece short, and a perennial first-round patsy, assuming they even make the playoffs in the first place.

  5. I’m very confused by these all time rankings now that the caps are ahead of the penguins. What are the parameters?

  6. I'm more worried about the lack of good defensemen at the NHL level and good defensive prospects than I am about the lack of someone to replace Ovechkin. Obviously, Miroshnichenko, Leonard, and Cristall aren't generational talents like Ovechkin, but I'm still pretty happy with that trio of forward prospects. At the NHL level, we have good young second or third line players in McMichael, Protas, and Lapierre.

We need to trade a goalie. Lindgren's value is as high as it ever will be. Stevenson and Shepard are both NHL ready at Hershey. We also need to trade Kuznetsov, and pay 80-90% of his salary. We can afford to pay his salary, but we need him out of town. We could trade Kuemper, but I think trading Lindgren makes more sense. I don't know how much value Shepard or Stevenson have in a trade because they don't have much NHL experience, but I think it's time to open up a path for them.

If we give up on the playoffs, we need to trade Dowd, Mantha, Pacioretty, and Edmundson. But I don't think it's time to give up on the playoffs just yet.

We need a retool, not a rebuild. I'm pretty happy with the trio of young forward prospects that we have. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I think that Miroshnichenko, Leonard, and Cristall each have a very good chance to be a top 6 forward, and a reasonable chance to be a top line forward.

  7. Hi Shannon. Wow – a nice surprise. I am so used to the Caps being trashed online – and you have given them some vindication. I am having a cheeky chuckle about being one ahead of the Pens – a Cap's fans dream.

  8. Caps fan here screw it let’s go on a fire sale anyone over 30 should be traded if they don’t have a NMC time to rebuild asap

  9. I think the Caps will wait until Ovi gets the record before they rebuild. I don't see him leaving to another team. I can dream about them moving Ovi over to McDavid's wing here in Edmonton, heck it'd be really cool to see him on Crosby's wing too, but that's just dreaming, and I respect the Caps for waiting on Ovechkin.

  10. Life long Caps fan here-

The Caps need to destroy and rebuild.
Oshie is getting old and was never very fast to begin with (an absolute stud in the shootout though), Kuzy is washed up and shows you just enough to make you pissed off he isn’t playing up to his potential, Backy is done and should have called it quits after the hip surgery, Ovie is a shell of his prime self and can’t keep up with the pace of the game (his baseline speed is that of which got PLD traded from Columbus but he’s not trying to get traded)

We don’t have a good core of young players cause we have been chasing greatness for the last decade and need to call it quits. Of course we would love another cup but if we are living in reality it’s not gonna happen in the Ovie era. Delaying the rebuild is just stupid at this point.

I love the Caps but it’s time to look to the future instead of living in the past.

And the Gretzky chase is over. If Ovie kept it up through this season and was 30-35 away at the end of the season then it would have likely been worth the degradation of the teams future potential and delaying the complete rebuild but at this point it’s a fools dream.

  11. cant start the rebuild until we get ovi, kuzy, oshie, carlson off our roster. Those 4 guys alone is near $50 million in cap space

  12. Ryan Leonard absolutely has the potential to be a superstar. That 2023 draft was ridiculously deep. Could rival 2003 as the deepest in the salary cap era. Yes, I know 2003 was b4 the salary cap but almost all of the careers of those draftees is under the salary cap

  13. I'm not entirely certain Ovevhkin cares about the goal record now his dad who he was very close to passed away. I think he'd rather win another Cup and if that means they have to win with scoring by committe and stingy defence then I think he'd be ok with that. Unfortunately this team isn't getting anywhere near a Cup without a rebuild.

  14. crosby and ovechkin had the same rookie year, every cup between the 2 teams has come by beating the other en route, every player the Pens have ever given less than 5mil AAV has played for the Capitals in their 30s. I'm not looking up that last one, but it's probably true idk.

  15. REBUILD! The window to retool closed after the summer. They got a hurt old guy who ain't there yet and a hurt defenseman who looks to be serviceable but is not exactly an offensive juggernaut.
When they were playing the Avs, Craig Laughlin said the Caps had the most difficult remaining schedule. Which is up from the 2nd toughest from THGs mid-season grading video a few days prior. Chemistry does a lot, and the shutdown defense is decent, but the playoff teams they're facing are likely to handle it more often than not. I'm really looking forward to the kids playing for BU coming to play for the big club next year or after.
