Mark Spector on Leon Draisaitl’s contract extension
Sportsnet’s Mark Spector joins Oilersnation Everyday to share some insight on his sit down interview with Leon Draisaitl regarding a contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.
can someone inform Spec (Edmontons top SPORTS reporter) that the longest possible contract in the NBA is 5 years. they don’t sign longer because they can’t
Leon has said publicly in the past that his favourite road city to visit is Los Angeles. As an Oiler fan that would suck, I'd be having Gretz flashbacks. lol
I hope that the big guys getting signed that paying a winning TEAM some sacrifices need to be made. If Leon and McDavid each negotiate a total less 1.5 million savings of 3 million, when Evander Kane comes due…less 500 k, Foegele if they want to keep him which I hope they do he’ll be due a small raise. Basically some guys have to try and spread the money around to be able to sign FA. I look at Hyman, Nuge and Kane and those are incredible team friendly deals. When Kane come due, maybe less 500k from what he’s making now maybe more and give him 2-3 years. I think we find two players for our bottom 6, 1 stay at home Dman and a goalie and keep everything else for years to come..and fill takeaway as needed.
Been a good soldier since day one, whatever happens I wish him well. Will deserve every dollar and then some and if not here then Broadway or where ever. Have had a high ankle sprain and no way would I have been playing in the cup semifinals. We were all witness to one of the greatest shows in history, save those memories for the grand kids. If you can believe it the ask for PK Subban was LD, Nurse and Puljujarvie.
There's two questions to be answered here: Does Draisaitl want to stay in Edmonton? If McDavid does, Draisaitl does, so that's likely a yes. What number do you put both at? It's not a matter of hometown discount: Draisaitl and McDavid want to win, and you need a complete roster in order to win. So I see Draisaitl at eight years and around $12.5 million per, which is more or less Pasta's deal in Boston. McDavid will need to come in around eight seasons at $14.5 million per year. In two years time, Neal's buyout is off the books and Campbell will be bought-out. Evan Bouchard is going to need a massive raise, like around $9 million per season. Hyman and Nuge are locked into affordable long-term deals, and Nurse will still be here. Ekholm and Kane will be coming near the end of their contracts, although I could see Ekholm extending at a lower number. Skinner will make double what he does now. Even with the cap going up around $10 million over the next three or four seasons, the Oilers will be capped out with this core of players. Because the Oilers have so few quality prospects, they are going to be adding a number of league minimum deals to round out the roster. Not ideal if the idea is to win cups. On the subject of TO, they've lost their mind giving Matthews, Marner, Nylander and a year left with a NMC on Tavares.
He seems to be just talking about the general market than giving any insight on Draisaitl. I dont mind that. Its not like anything Drai said will be a guarantee. No player would do that
Dryhole’s benchmark starting price will be north of Austin Matthews deal at $13.25m Especially if it’s a long term deal. As a percentage of the cap (prorated to cap increases) he could easily be closer to $15m
Its really funny, because almost all other stars who end up resigning have stated in the past that ultimately they would love to stay and resign IF a contract can be worked out. Mcdavid and Draisaitl have not even done that, so my guess is its a clear as day sign that they're leaving. And you will know for sure this summer when Draisaitl does not sign an extension.
Leon & Connor need to consider the Cap when resigning for a new contract. Al'so, if they want to win a Cup they cannot be too greedy. Sure we can pay them $13-15 mill apiece or what ever its gonna take, but what does that do to the teams ability to sign the needed pieces to win a Cup ? Sure they can go to Arizona, San Jose, Anaheim et al, to teams who will have the money, but I dont think those teams will be seeing a Cup anytime soon. Connor & Leon need to be realistic…IMO not only can they.take a lower rate and possibly win a Cup, but they they can still get what they want by staying with the team for a longer term, however at a lower rate. It all balances out in the end.

Why would anybody interview this guy about hockey?

Salary cap needs to go. This owner would open his wallet to win if he was allowed to.
Mark is a plug. Guy probably sucked his way to the top
Keep up the solid work 🤝
Leon is going to Anaheim
Spector is a cancer to the team…smh
Spector the ultimate TOOL. Why is anyone asking this guy’s opinion.

Again, no link.

Loe signs for 4 and Mcdavid for 3 years. They tie themselves together. If no cup is present by then they jail break

Connor & Leon are never going anywhere, they will be Oilers their whole careers.
