Bulletin board material? This was maybe the biggest talking point all offseason besides goaltending and it’s been 100% true. We also live in a salary cap world and were right to not pay that much longterm money to either of these guys. They were luxuries to have on affordable deals and now they’re borderline albatross contracts.
Those are the tough business decisions you have to make to give yourself the opportunity to have a long window of contention. I doubt there’s any bad blood on either side here.

We all expected it though, Severson is just openly acknowledging something everyone in the hockey world made a point of when speaking about the devils this year. Had to take the short term hit this season for the long term plan to work out. Ask jackets and penguins fans, they’re not jazzed about the contracts those 2 guys got, but that’s how UFA goes.

Severson was a cumulative -120 during his Devils tenure. He was a complete liability and usually could be found standing around looking like a window licker after every goal scored. He can fuck right off.

yeah they did . but the regression of seigs/marino/goalies was not expected . not all that riveting . and you guys wanted to be paid . which was okay . they weren’t gonna do it after drafting hughes/nemec .

I think the idea was to have Nemec in the AHL experiencing growing pains there. But no team plans for being down their top pairing D (one for 3/4 of the season and one for god knows how long). Suddenly you have to divvy up those minutes across all D, including ones that should NOT be getting that much ice time.

Nemec is already 10x better than Severson at his best.
Hopefully, Luke’s growing pains don’t last 8 years like Severson’s did.

Nemec is already showing he’s going to replace the holes left by Graves / sevo and then some. Luke likely to be great defensively too once he marinates a bit. It just sucks being down Siegs and Hamilton and forcin two rookies to take on huge roles. If we could have kept severson for 1/3 of the price we would have done it in a heart beat I’m sure but it is what it is

Sevo, you played for this team during the dark ages with 2 playoff appearances and 1 series win, a series where we were blown out on home ice except for game 7. You’re supposed to be on defense and not let that happen, right? You contributed to, and were even directly responsible for, some big losses over the years, and you bitched about being put on a lower pairing when your play was complete ass. I acknowledge you gave a lot of good years to this team and you did step up in the playoffs, but let’s not throw stones when your current team is last in the division, in the bottom three of the conference, and in the bottom five of the league
