State of the Buccaneers Episode 9 New Year Recruiting Special
Welcome to the state of the Buccaneers podcast I’m your host Jacob peorn and this is the biggest and only fan run podcast of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers we’ll get right back to you after the Tune welcome back uh to the state of the Buccaneers podcast uh it’s been a long hiatus uh since I’ve recorded an episode it’s been about a month over a did an episode right after got hired and just talked about the hire and talked about basketball how the basketball season was going at that
Point um I’ve been slacking on getting recorded I’ve just had a lot of stuff going on in my life um just a whole lot of stuff uh just the holidays um I meant to do a like a holiday themed episode try to get one out before then but
Didn’t have time um just a whole lot of stuff I got a new car I got a new job uh started in the new year just started that um so I haven’t had as much time as I want to since it’s it’s kind of a big
Boy job now so I’ve been getting trained on that um but I’m glad to be back and talk about some Buccaneer Athletics um there’s been a lot of stuff happened lots of news um oh and I forgot one more thing I got a new mic uh I hope you noticed the
Sound quality so maybe my my uh audio will be better from here on out hopefully it don’t get wrecked and uh post edit um but uh yeah so audio will be better um I’m planning on getting a new camera here soon um now may have to wait we’ll see how that goes
Um but the big thing for me since we’re a podcast and we’re on Spotify uh you don’t want to hear the audio crackling the whole time um but I’m grateful to have a new mic uh and hopefully it sounds better um and I’m going to improve on some other stuff lighting and
Background design I know this this background right here is kind of simple it’s just a mess um I I’d like to have sort of a studio somewhere in my room or in another part of my house um we’ll just see how that goes um but
That’s all I want to do and one more thing I wanted to show youall back about around theend beginning of December I may have shown it last episode maybe not um I think I got this after the episode anyway I had a custom figure made um
Using a McFarland figure base um of quay Holmes right here in the action POS he saw it um on social media I post all over social media once I got it but shout out Patrick’s Customs I does he does Payton paint painting sorry I can’t talk tonight um any anything you want any
Sports figure probably any other fig type of figure as well um he he does a good job uh takes care of it I may have some more made made here in the future but shout out to him uh that’s interesting piece we’re going to have up
In the set um and uh that’s about all I had for the intro tonight um just wanted to update you guys on how I’ve been um and we’re gonna have a lot of stuff going on here in the New Year lots of new co- or guests try to get some more
ETSU athletes and coaches on I’d like to get Trey lamb on I’d like to get Brook Savage back on any of the coaches out there that want to come on any players former players um just reach out to me on social media um so I know you’re
Interested um because I wanna I want to Hype you up I want to hear your stories when to hear everything you have to do um but without further Ado uh we’re going to get into the episode tonight um and the biggest story I’d say in the
Last month of ETS Athletics is uh of course with the trail hiring um and all that the news that came out of that uh the staff Staffing and everything um of course we have had Signing Day this last month um and it was it was a pretty big
One for ETSU with the transfer portal um being as big as it is now um ETSU got a 32 man class between transfers and and uh and uh just high school recruits coming off the field um straight into college uh it’s it’s a pretty big class
Um and uh I’m G to go down through here and just sort of talk about each of them um as because Trey Lam uh he had a very different uh system compared to Sanders and then uh quarrels after him um so he’s been bringing in a lot of his own
Guys from Gardener web uh and some outside transfers from various D1 universities um and some Jos and a whole whole bunch of different guys um so we’ll see how how many of those make him the Spring ball and how many come in after uh Spring ball um but I’m going to
Break down all all of them who I’m sort of most excited for um let’s start out uh I have the page pulled up um says lame was very excited uh about the work he put in he had to work quick um with being just getting hired on in
December uh so he his goal was to get 28 to 30 midyear players um um from colleges he’s work with or seen in college and uh he still wants to sign 8 to 10 I think there’s a few of them I haven’t I know there’s a few commits I
Probably won’t get into them until they’re officially signed with ETSU um in a later episode and we’ll talk about more about that when that comes down but uh to start off with um there was the uh jquan Adams from Garder web uh he was a freshman All-American on
The offensive Lions second Team all big South ovc he played one season at Monroe College in New York um that’s one of the more ones I’m excited about I know we need to know to get our o line established that’s one of the biggest things especially with the air raid you
You to have good good fast offensive lineman that are good at pass talking um let’s see excited about him Ty Anderson that’s one of the other ones I was really excited about uh he was a 2022 Big South defensive freshman of the year had 90 tackles 11.5 for loss two sacks one interception
And two fumble recoveries for Garder web um in his career there had two defensive touchdowns including one against Marshall um he was a three star Prospect coming out of high school uh and was a state Player of the Year in Georgia yeah I said Georgia we have ji
Barnes from Garden Web defensive line um he had 25 tackles three tackles for loss 1.5 sacks um that was his entire G career with running Bulldogs most of that was last year here also played in Georgia um he was all an all State defensive lineman down there we have Ryan Barrett
A defensive back from Garder web um didn’t see any action but should be uh some depth good depth and potential to break out for us in that secondary I know we’re not going to need we’re just going to need dep back there um with uh Sheldon Arnold and others
Coming back uh we have Jimmy bowry a defensive back from Gardner web um he played 12 games recorded 29 tackles three tackles for loss one sack one interception and five pass breakups his freshman year was 2022 he was also an all state player down in Georgia Jonathan
Burns he played from 21 played from Gard on Garden Web as well um all these guys are playing most of the guys are going to be playing on Gardner web um he played in 10 games had 23 receptions for 182 yards and one touchdown uh he was played
For he was yeah he’s from South aen South Carolina um I’m from I used to live down that around that area so I know that area pretty good um let’s see okay here’s the big one one of the big ones another the big ones I was talking about Cole Doyle from St
Francis um he’s gonna he’s probably gonna be our starter start the year I’d say um just with his res uh resume um or his uh experience uh he came from St Francis um he played 20 in the 2022 and 2023 Seasons uh he was their starter he threw
For uh close to 3,000 yards and 34 touchdowns ran for 579 in two touchdowns he was the 222 Northeast conference offensive player of the year and all Northeast conference first team he was a 2022 Walter Payton award finalist and last year’s second Team all Northeast conference um he led the NC in completion
Percentage second in touchdown passes and fourth in passing yards in 2023 um he should be a good replacement for Tyler Odell who had unfortunately hasn’t found a home yet um would love to have him on the podcast if he wants to come on um any any of these players are
More than welcome to be on come on the show and just talk about their experiences playing ETSU or college football in general because that’s what I want this podcast to be um but uh looking forward to see cold oil on the field uh he’s gonna be a good one next
Up uh we have EP eper sorry I’m I cannot pronounce his first name I’m having trouble or tough time pronouncing that eepm Floyd 510 190 pound wide receiver from Gardener web as well he’s from Vera Beach Florida he played two seasons at Gardener web had eight receptions for
112 yards in 2022 last year he had 35 receptions for 47 yards in a touchdown he led Gardner web and receiving and ranked second in receptions uh this past year he had two kickoff returns for 32 yards he was with top 300 wide receiver Prospect uh coming out of ver Beach High
School uh so he was a two he was one of the top players in Florida top wide receivers in Florida um I think all these guys are Speedy wide receivers we have Justin Franklin a 58 160 wide receiver from Garder web he started out this is the guy I
Think he was the high rated High rated three star Prospect I think he started out at LSU if I’m not mistaken let’s see Justin Franklin um Garder web he he was a let’s check um let’s see no I think I’m I’m think I’m off base
With him let’s see D he one of these guys started out somewhere else before they transfer to Gardener web I think I’ll know him when I see it he uh okay he didn’t transfer he’s just played it Gardner web um last year he had four played in 14
Games and had 40 receptions for 633 yards and four touchdowns had four rushes for 45 yards uh completed two passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns too as a freshman he had 37 receptions for 562 yards and four touchdowns okay he was pre-season all big South last year or in
2022 uh didn’t play much in 2022 we have Willie Harris from Cochran Georgia he transferred from Gardner web he played in 31 games had 53 tackles 17.5 tackles for loss 9.5 sacks 13 quarterback hurries one force fumble and one fumble recovery he was a All State selection in
Georgia all one thing I’m noticing about all these guys is they’re all state Selections in Georgia so he’s get but I know the Trey lamb has connections to high school football down there so I think that’s going to really help ETSU moving forward um all these guys are stout we
Have dalan Howard one of our first non Garder web guys on here uh you transferring from Georgia Military College I think that’s a prep school juko maybe I’m I’m I’ll have to look it up here after the show but he played in 11 games in 2023 I recorded 30 tackles
10 tackles for loss and six sacks um so he should be a good depth signing along that defensive line or probably could play linebacker too we have Nick hunter from Garder web he played 22 games at Gardner web had 28 tackles four tackles for loss 1.5 sacks five hurries and one force fumble
Another All State selection out of Georgia all these guys I we have some good guys coming in okay here’s the here’s the guy uh that was a high rank Prospect Aj Johnson another Garden Web transfer he uh red shirted in 2022 played nine games last year had 20 receptions for
284 yards and three touchdowns um he was a fourstar ranked Prospect I believe he transferred from let see I think he transferred from somewhere Aj Johnson ETSU Football let’s see Garder web Johnson he there’s something there was a story with him I forget it but he had offers
From a lot of big bigger schools and ended up going to Gardener web um he ended up uh now he just hear it ETSU uh good size for a receiver I’m not sure probably Speedy all these guys I’m assuming are speed speed guys anotherone of them are two like big bulky guys um
Another a prospect I’m excited about Jaylen King who was uh Garder web’s better QB this past year um he played in nine games completed 107 passes for uh 1,223 yards and 11 touchdowns rush for 401 yards and five scores um he started the last seven
Games of the year uh I think the other guy got hurt uh he wasn’t he didn’t play as good as Jaylen King did um Jaylen King I think he will be we may have two QBs I don’t it’s GNA come down it’s going to be a QB battle between him and
Cole Doyle um he was you another All State selection in Georgia um all these guys um went to Gardener web help lead him to the playoffs um hopefully with the talent we have coming back with these Gardener web guys and uh the uh High School guys and other
Transfers uh we can build a socon contender next year um another offensive line will M McCraw from I hope I think I’m saying that right from Garder web he played in 12 games uh they started 12 games last year played in nine in 2022 um All Region and all state in
Georgia um some good size on that offensive line uh we have a Tyson Moore another offensive line from Garder web um he was he’s going to be some depth um along that offensive line uh which we desperately need we have another wide receiver basically Gardner webs wide receivers transfer
Here um Kareem Paige he played 18 games over the last two seasons a total of 55 catches for 581 yards and three touchdowns Leed Garder web with 37 receptions in 2023 um let’s see season High 72 receiving yards he was a All State guy um you rated is the number seven senior
Prospect in Northwest Georgia like to hear that um all these guys are talented I think with running the air raid we’re gonna have spread the ball around a lot um so we’re we’re definitely going to need them uh towan Royal another Gardener web transfer B basically all these guys are Gardener web transfers
Outside uh three or four of them um Taiwan Royal uh he played in one game probably going to be a depth guy uh all region in nor Cross Georgia he’s a DB six foot DB definitely gonna need that size cam Sims one of our few non Gardener web
Transfers he transferred in from merer he’s a 62 185 defensive back he played 14 games at Mercer posting 38 tackles two interceptions and three p pass breakups um in 2022 had 30 tackles and two interceptions um it’s good to see he was a three star crw as well it’s good to
See us stealing some Talent from some in-conference Rivals um hopefully you can see the field and be a good impact in that secondary we have Mike Sumpter uh one of two FBS transfers I think he’s a 64 300lb offensive line um he was a freshman last year and didn’t play he
Was a three star recruit coming out of high school so he he may be a starter we we’ll watch for that um another transfer from Garder web along the offensive live Gabe Thompson 63 310 offensive line um he was a two-time allconference selection started 25 games okay this
This might be our best o line transfer right here um of course course they had their Russian attack last year um nine games four games yeah he graded out 89% registered 38 pancake blocks a senior year of high school okay that’s a good that’s a good pickup for us Rashad Whitehead um
63255 defensive lineman um let’s see how long are we going on this podcast we’re at 2 minutes right now sorry if this kind of looks I it’s just me reading off stats but I mean that’s basically what we’re doing we’re going down through this class um and talking about all the players here
Um he played 12 games posted 12 tackles 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack he spent time at Liberty as well I played Seven games for the flames he saw a little bit of playing time there even played in a Bull game against Eastern Michigan so he’d be
A good he might be a good rotation piece along that defensive line Seth Williams a 64300 pound offensive lineman from transferred from Appalachian State um played in 13 games one of their death pieces he’s probably going to be a starter on Long the offensive Hall I
Have to look and see who all um we have but he will probably uh be a starter um with his experience and size um and our last transfer that we’re going to talk about today um is Jaden Woods a six foot 205 defensive back who transfer from akar um he played quite a
Bit for akran um played in 12 games in 2022 and four games last year uh he totaled 31 tackles two pass breakups um he was also Eastern Kentucky a total 53 tackles two interceptions and six pass breakups there he was a third Team all ason in
20121 um he was also from decar Georgia um was a one of the top players there um so he’s a good all these transfers lots of size lots of speed I think these are going to help us um build that dep back up um and I think I think that’s all the
Transfers for right now there I think there may be some others that haven’t been posted yet um but we’ll talk about them later in a future episode um we have our freshman signes we have uh a three star uh Jordan JC Anderson 63 wide receiver from Jacksonville
Florida um so that wide receiver room I’m really liking our wide receiver room next year um have Jeremiah Curry a 511 linebacker from bluon South Carolina he was a first team All Region selection and registered 108 tackles from bluon South Carolina um so that should be
That’s someone to look out for in the future okay probably the biggest commit we got in this class um as far as high school players reys Fountain uh 6 foot 189 QB out of Rome Georgia he threw for over 11,000 yards and 99 touchdowns in his high school career 41-7 as a starter
And was a the 2023 region six uh six was that 6A that’d be 6A player of the year um he had 4 4 pass and touchdowns and completed 74% of his passes as senior and he was in offense to average 47.5 points a game I think
He’s going to be perfect for the Air Raid Offense he had FBS offers from Georgia Southern Jacksonville State some other I think he had I forget I think wford offered him too and there’s a several others um they were in on him um but that’s going to be a big a big help
Uh as he develops he may red shortt next year with Cole Doyle and Jaylen King just depends on who wins the battle and who lamb thinks is the best um we have Isaiah Hall a 63 270 offensive line from lrange Georgia um All Region selection there well not
Much to say I mean you can’t really hype up offensive lineman prospects unless they’re like Quinton Nelson or something um you never know how they’re going to do Taylor McClure 61210 linebacker from hazeville or not Georgia North Carolina um multisport athlete we’ll see how he is we’re just gonna there’s not much to
Say there um tra travan Watson 511 175 wide receiver from Gainesville Georgia um and the last one we have Braxton wil a 64 275 defensive line from favet fa I can’t pronounce that favet Ville Tennessee I think that’s how it’s pronounced I could be wrong um that’s a
Big boy right there total 65 tackles 10 sacks 18 tackles for loss and two Force fumbles in his senior year it was an all region selection um so that covers the class for right now I think there’s some other guys that have committed or signed um in the last couple weeks because this
Was back before Christmas when signning day officially was um but that that’s a stout class like the just the skill position players we got and the big thing was getting a QB that could run Tre Lamb’s offense and we got three of them three very good QBs um I know a lot
Of people were sad Tyler Rell is leaving I’m sad too um but uh carrying on in the buccaneer Spirit of him that 2021 season and all the great things he does I’m I’m grateful for him we’ll see what he does in the future but um I guess it’s the
Cold doy jayen king or uh what’s his name I am silly let’s pull it up Rees Fountain all three of those guys uh it could be any one of them uh that breaks out and wins the starting job it may be multiple but I wouldn’t recommend that just based on what I’ve seen
Before um so that about covers the recruiting class I I think it’s a good class really great class uh first year class for Trey Lam covered all the needs we had um spread it out all different positions oine dline linebacker secondary QB got one tight end we don’t
You don’t need a super amount of tight ends just a few uh wide receiver of course one thing I did not see was running back um so we may pick up one later on um or maybe he’s just happy with the guys we have I know we have bring back at Bryson
Herby um and some other guys uh but that should be that’s I think he has everything covered in that class um I guess the next thing I’m going to talk about uh before I before I transition in the basketball uh back before Christmas uh we saw a longtime member of the
Buccaneer family finally get a head coaching opportunity and Billy Taylor um it wasn’t at the D1 level like some of us had hoped um but it was at tusum they had an opening their head coach left to be the I think it’s see tusum see Jerry odm he went to be the let’s
See news not gosh dang it Jerry odm football he was named the the defensive coordinator at Western Carolina um so that opened up an opportunity for Billy Taylor to get his first ever head coaching opportunity I’m rooting for him there um just had to do a quick shout out to him there’s rumors
He was gonna go to the Carson get the Carson Newman job um but he decided to stay closer to tries I’ve heard he still wants to be around the ETSU program a little bit um and that may his uh only opportunity to get a head
Coaching job so I’m happy for him and I hope he does great things there I may have to check out a tusam game sometime um but other than that it’s been a crazy week uh in college football news of course we had the championship on Monday uh Michigan won I know that’s
A lot of controversy for a lot of people um so we’ll see how that goes I mean you could have seen it coming they just were the most talented team in FBS FCS uh South Dakota State dominated Montana uh their QB Clifton mcdal entered the portal so we’ll see how where that
Goes um now and then after that uh we had some massive news this week uh Pete Carroll uh retired in the NFL um and then later on in the afternoon the news finally dropped Nick Sabin retired so there may be a wave that affects the Southern Conference um
Just depend on what happens someone might get hired uh a people bunch of people might get hired I I wouldn’t worry about our staff as much but U Nick Sabin retiring that’s I College college sports defining move um and then of course bill bellich got fired um after the Patriots stunk it up
This year um but uh we’ll we’ll talk less about that um since it’s that’s more Pro Sports but we can get into it a little bit here on this show um but that’s about all I wanted to say uh as far as the football segment um the transition us into
Basketball I was just going to ask um the trivia question today is uh what postseason tournament did ETSU play in and Coach Steve Forbes first year at ETSU in the 20156 season was it a the NIT the B the CBI the C the CIT or D the Vegas
16 I’ll give you about five seconds because most most people are going to know this like that if you followed ETSU sports for around last 10 years um but it was the the Vegas 16 tournament the ill- fated Vegas 16 tournament uh that uh they wanted to get
Some like some of the high Majors that didn’t make it to make it to the NIT or um NCA tournament but they all turned him down so it was some decent mid major schools uh let’s see I’m gonna go find let’s go back Vegas 16 I
Believe who won it all Champions or Old Dominion runner-ups Oakland we had Townsen UC Santa Barbara Tennessee Tech Old Dominion Northern Illinois Louisiana Tech we beat I believe we beat Louisiana Tech yeah we beat Louisiana Tech and then lost to Oakland um but that was just a interesting piece of trivia uh the
Transition us the basketball um when I left you all last uh last gave you last gave you an update on the season uh the Buccaneers were 4 and four um their November the start was a bit up and down um and they had just beaten Jacksonville State on the road to get
Their first yeah their first road win of the year um after that they had a close one with Tennessee Tech much closer than it should have been that was a home game uh Kumari Peterson had a great performance then 23 points um the uh next game gosh dang it it’s not loading fast
Enough but um overall in December they went six and one um had a lot of great success uh showing the potential of Brook Savage as a head coach uh that six and one gosh dang it my internet’s being crap right now let’s see ETSU let’s pull it
Up well they went six and one in December after that four and four start um two losses and then they had a four six six two three four five um after that after the Tennesse tich game they blew out tusam a bad D2 team of course it’s tuscum that that was
A replacement game for a Delaware was supposed to play us but they backed out um we then beat Kansas City UMKC at home just before Christmas that was a we had a pretty dominant performance asamoa played great quari Kuran Boyd played great we had a tough loss on the
Road to Utah State who is now ranked they are one of the best mid- major teams in the country they may be they have I don’t know if they’re a sweet 16 team they may get one win off in the toury um they just dominated us and we
Couldn’t hit three throws but Jaden Seymour had a Bonkers performance he had 30 points um gosh dang it sorry about these issues um I’m just trying to find Jaden sey more stats for this game um box score box score for this game it’s taken forever I all I know is
Jaden Seymour had 30 points he’s been he’s been on a tear heater lately he’s been just balling out hitting threes Galore playing physical getting rebounds boxing out um let’s see I hate that my computer wants to be slow internet wants to be slow just because I’m recording the podcast um let’s
See okay and then the next game we went on the road and dominated Eastern Carolina I think we led the entire game pretty much that was a big road win over American opponent um Seymour had 24 rebound Boyd Ling rebounds kimari Peterson he’s been our assist leader
Most of the year so he continues the ball out against Mercer we beat we start off conference play 80 to 69 guari Peterson had 22 J Jaden Parker 12 rebounds and cisk Gabe cisk let and assist um but we start off conference play really strong that was a good game shut down
Mercer um but the last two games have been rough uh for ETSU I hope to get this podcast out uh when they were still on the roll um but unfortunately not uh we lost to UNCC Greensboro on the road and we just shot poorly in the
Second half we had him tied up in the first half and unfortunately lost I’m not sure if it was something related in the game or not but Karan Boyd is out for a little bit I think because of a foot injury um he had a boot on last night uh
We lost to Western Carolina who just shot the lights out we couldn’t keep up um Jaden Seymour played pretty good um Ebie played pretty good Peterson all right but the rest of the team didn’t really show up not enough rebounding not enough defense and Western just couldn’t miss um but uh
ETSU still has time to turn it around um it’s been it’s been about what I expected about a 500ish team this year we have a lot of talent and I think Brook Savage is coming into his own as a coach Utah State’s coach complimented him um a lot of other coaches I think
Think highly of him um I I think Kylie of his coach actic but his coaching performance thus far this year um I think it’s I think it’s w higher for ETSU we’re a lot further along than we were at this point last year or even in 20 last three years uh
The year under Shay the two years under Oliver um I think we’re getting it’s going to take a minute um but we’re going to be a contender in the socom um now we we got to beat teams that have winning records um that’s what it comes
Down to we got to beat the UNCC Greensboro and Western Carolina who looking like the two strongest teams in the conference I think um and uh I think who do we play next we play Ferman next on Saturday at Ferman um we’re gonna need to get that
Victory man we need to get a road Victory bad we only have two thus far this year and just to even us up in the conference and Ferman isn’t that good this year um I believe their last game they had like their top four scorers out or something top three something like
That um and then we go on the road again against Watford and then on the 21st we have probably our biggest game home game this year so far against Chattanooga the Rivalry um it’s time to get one back against them after losing these past several years with Lamont Paris
Teams and then now Dan Earl we gotta beat him we gotta get one back on him um but that’s that’s about all I had to talk about um just I just hope Jaden Seymour keeps it up um with his all all I think he’s going to be all conference I don’t know
If he has enough our team’s record isn’t good enough to get player of the year we’ll see we’ll see what happens but Seymour is tearing it up um it’s probably going to come down to him and uh wbr at it’ll probably be wbr at Western Carolina but um he definitely should be first
Team uh but uh just wanted to briefly talk about the ladybucks as well um they just Buckaneers I think it’s just the Buccaneers now I forget if it was um sorry if I Mis said said it um women’s basketball ETSU Buccaneers okay they’re just the bucks now they at
Some point I think they were the ladybucks but um they changed it um but they are continuing up their Pace they just started conference play tonight uh they are 12 and four uh so they’ve done a pretty good job this year they just started conference Play In Smoke
Sanford uh the lead their leading score Kendall FY was out um and wait I think that’s their leading score let me go check um let’s look at please pull up please pull up stats stats no it’s net of a brown Kendall fol is their second leading score um but
Kendall F was out tonight I believe um but hopefully that isn’t a recurring issue for him and they keep keep up the strong play because it it matters to keep uh the men’s and women’s team uh good um at all times um since those are two of the biggest Sports here at
ETSU um but I think that’s all I have for tonight I didn’t want to go too terribly long um because I gotta get get to bed got work tomorrow and I got a long drive a road trip um but uh just wanted to give a
Shout out uh as I mentioned before in a previous podcast I am this podcast is now part of the sector media family uh left turn col and a few other podcasts uh that they were or their owner Cody he was partially responsible for me creating this podcast getting a start um
He helped me helped me get fired up but um I just wanted to say I’m associated with them now and uh you should be seeing a lot more social media posts interacting with them um but that’s all I wanted to say um if you uh want to be
