Did Ilya Samsonov show improvements after AHL stint?
Jay Onrait was joined by TSN Hockey analyst Martin Biron to discuss how Ilya Samsonov looked against the Red Wings after his stint in the AHL, and the Maple Leafs blowing a lead for the third straight game.
Although Samsonov allowed 2 ugly goals in a 4-2 Leafs' loss to the Wings when compared to 5 in regulation during a 6-5 OT loss last month to the CBJ, I'm still not convinced he deserves another contract with the Leafs. Whether he'll show a consistent ability to make more of those saves he needs to make remains TBD; he's still a sieve.
Sammy still blows. What did the Leafs expect? That going down to the AHL and playing ZERO games was going to fix him? Dude was a bust in Washington, the Caps knew it and walked away from the former 1st rounder with no regrets. Last year was a complete fluke. Leafs always trying to be the smartest guy in the room with these perplexing gambles on goalies. How did broken Matt Murray work out as a Starter? Did the Leafs fix him too? 😂😂😂
Sammy played a lot better. Sure there's still room for improvement, but that can easily be said about the entirety of the team. When you are spending 52 mill on 5 players and can't win then the goalie is not the main problem.
He did improve, he was better in his positioning and was playing a lot more confidently. He needs more work, he isn’t back to his better form yet, he let in 1-2 bad goals and was hung out to dry on the others by the leafs. Goalies are the last line of defense not the first
Are you kidding me, that break away he flopped around like a fish out of water and the 3rd goal he was out of his crease and out of position. The coach and Samsonov should both be gone.

His last performance he allowed 5 goals in 19 shots. This time he only allowed 2 in 20. He’s playing a lot more confidently.

Spoiler alert, he Never played a game in the AHL. He never went Down to the AHL. Can’t blame Samsonov with the amount of Giveaways by the Leafs.
Samsonov didnt need the AHL … the team let him down again. Just like the previous 3 games, they let a guy right in front get a shot with no challenge.
