“Nobody’s Satisfied” | Buffalo Sabres Coach Don Granato After 1-0 Loss To Vancouver Canucks

“Nobody’s Satisfied” | Buffalo Sabres Coach Don Granato After 1-0 Loss To Vancouver Canucks

You it seemed like your team had done a a pretty nice job defending all night then you get down to three defenseman and have to use zus Genson back there what what was that like for you well it’s not it’s not nice having two guys in concussion protocol for getting hit

In the head that’s that’s for sure and uh we there was no power play out of it obviously uh it’s frustrating but I thought zus stepped up um I liked Opie’s response when when dolls got hit right in the head um unfortunately dolls couldn’t evade the the referee was

Standing there as well uh and had to take a hit um that obviously was to the head cuz they pulled him off the ice and concussion protocol um Opie stepped in I like that Eric Johnson did um you know and again Gussy uh zus playing playing D when he

Had to I thought the guys did a nice job there do you think the Le sending the wrong message by letting a player like darene get hit in the head like that just giving a two-minute penalty yeah I I won’t comment on that obviously I can

Tell you you know I think the the league the league takes care of stuff I can tell you it’s not it’s not fun to watch two of your defensemen uh go off in the again concussion protocol and it’s even things are you know there’s no no penalties on the play so I

Guess there was a two-minute on the play for delene canceled out by Owen um but again it’s not for me to comment from a the league watches it the league looks at it I’m sure they’ll communicate on it I’m just telling you when you know my frustration within the game

Um is obvious when you see your guys go out getting hit in the head Sam Samuelson uh I I just walked by him I didn’t get a chance to talk to him um uh so I I don’t have a report on him yet um I just hope he’s okay I know you’re not

Into moral victories but I mean the guys I mean they seem like pretty happy on one hand that they they played a pretty good game and you played maybe well enough to win I mean just how did you feel about just the effort play play the game you know that’s obviously a very

Good hockey team with uh a lot of Feelgood and and um you know we did nice job limit him nice job to play hard uh had chances to win um but nobody’s going to be satisfied with that I can I can assure you that our group is not um so

Um then obviously I’m not D you guys hit cross bar and post almost nightly it’s just one of those things I I don’t know if you can explain it I is it just one of those things yeah you know I can remember early last year

We were someone told me a stat 20 some games in we’re leading the league in goalpost which I would have never known that was a year ago and and and you don’t you don’t really pay attention to much of those I know tonight uh a couple guys ding it pretty good cousins I

Remember on the power play um it’s just unfortunate you know there’s reason to feel good keep going doing what you’re doing do it more you know um so I I don’t think we hang our head on it but yeah I I don’t really know what to tell you on that one what

Did you think about the way that Ryan Johnson played a lot of lot of extra responsibility given the guys that you had out very good Ryan was very good he looked fresh he looked uh energized and um you know I thought he was was and consistent as a result reliable and he

Had to step up so um I was very happy with his game and he’s moving along very obviously very young in his career so um to show Improvement every day is is is great we touched on it a little the other day but with Greenway playing more

Up the center just what do you think of his time there between those two you know he he he helps giving us uh could use him with a matchup they they’ve they’ve got two lines there I think they’ve got players that are plus 30 on the season which is uh crazy when you

Look at you know how effective that is five on five and uh you know Greenway was asked to play against one line it was pretty tough and and uh that that that helped it’s nice to have him in a center position down well with our defenseman minimize his own time and he

Did was very effective in that tonight extend offensive Z time when he has possession so he he did a you know another nice job two nights in a row at uh two games in a row I should say at Center for us in that regard do you

Think the overall def I know maybe once or twice you got caught with a long shift because they couldn’t get out of the Zone but overall did you feel the defensive effort whether was killing plays or whatever it might be was very good for your team it was I thought it

Was really good uh you know just going through the chances against uh you know in between periods and postgame here you know once again um your chances against are are originate from a turnover or an individual error um where you think you’re on offense and you’re fighting to

Get back on defense um couple happened four on four we had uh we had defenseman changing behind us and we you know expose a puck that gets turned over for a couple chances but I thought you you know other than a couple a few individual blunders yes we closed quick

And we closed hard um fast and and and um assertive and that was something that we needed to do tonight and that is one area they did we did well I thought thanks thanks all be safe

Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato spoke with the media after the team’s 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on January 13, 2024. He talked about a good effort but that no one is satisfied, the lack of penalties on hits to Rasmus Dahlin and Mattias Samuelsson, and more.

  1. I see the Canucks are yet another organization whose rebuild has surpassed ours. 13 years. Our playoff drought has gotten through puberty and will be legal to drive soon enough. And are coach is complaining about bad calls, goal posts, and injuries. I’m so tired of the excuses.
