Career .906 sv% and has not really had a great defense in front of him the last few seasons.

He has term which is useful moving forward and our insistence on running a 1A 1B would be good for him to not get overworked like he has been in Columbus.

Current season performance: 23 games played, 7 wins, 3.25 GAA, .907%.

I don’t have the context for just how badly their defense plays in front of him because I haven’t watched any of their games this year other than when we played them and I don’t remember that one too well. 3.25 GAA + .907% tells me they hang him out to dry a lot, but it’s never a great idea to judge performance only based on numbers and not on actually watching, so I will leave it to others to add context on how much that 3.25 is his fault versus bad defense.

Contract: 5.4 mil AAV through 2027. For context he would be our highest paid goalie easily, and tied with Tuevo as the fourth highest paid player on the roster. Aho, Svech and Orlov are higher paid. Also remember we have tons of contract decisions to make over the summer and guys like Jarvy and Skjei are going to get raises. Our cap situation is a bit tight. Cusp players like Tuevo/Necas/Pesce would almost certainly be either the trade bait for him or not resigned over the summer to make room for him.

All that to say that even though we’d be trading someone to get him, I’d still be a little hesitant without at least a bit of retention. I also question whether there is a place long-term on the roster. Raants is likely done after this year but Kooch isn’t and Freddie is still a big question mark. Fred is under contract for an additional year so you then get into a situation where you have 3 starting goalies contracted so who goes to the AHL?

Whether or not he would be good for us as a player, I think big picture it’s not a great fit unless Freddie retires before ever coming back. The fact that we still don’t have a timetable for a potential return makes a goalie search hard for us. I think it’s more likely we go for a rental if anything, somebody in an expiring contract who we can keep or move as needed.

I am also concerned about his quote “I am not a backup.” Is he willing to share with Kooch? He wouldn’t be coming in as the de facto starter so that’s a big question as well.

He’s decent but he’s probably not top-32 in the world sooooo not sure about your last line Elvis. At least a 1B, and if we did get him, a backup once Freddie is healthy again (assuming he’s back in a month or so).

I think you either gotta go all out on a bonafide #1 guy (like a Gibson) or get a veteran who can start when needed and would accept his fate as backup once everyone is healthy (like a Mrazek)

Not for that contract. Decently high cap hit + term makes me uncomfortable.

can we just put Freddie onto LTIR i mean ffs there’s no way we dont make a move and just sit on our tail and wait for him to come back late February *at the earliest*

  6. Crysrdiz

I don’t think he fits. He wants to leave Columbus because he wants to be a starter. Pyotr is our starter.

  7. socialaxolotl

If we find out PK is out long term I think we almost have to make some sort of move for a goaltender because Raanta is going to run out of gas at this rate

  8. I think it comes down to what the prognosis for Anderson is. Anderson is still signed for next season, and Merzlikins has 3 more years after this one on his deal just like Kochetkov. If Anderson hangs the pads up I’d say trade for Merzlikins if the cost makes sense, we’d have $3.4 million in cap from Anderson to absorb some of Merzlikins cap hit; no retention lowers the cost. Kochetkov may be out a week, a month, who knows; concussions are not like other soft tissue injuries.

You don’t want to make a knee-jerk reaction and screw the cap or future success with a panic trade. Yes the cap is going up, but we have like $31 million to resign Jarvis, Drury, Necas, Turbo, Marty, Noesen, Pesce, Skjei, and Chatfield who collectively have a cap hit of around $23 million this season. I know we’re not resigning all of them with +$8 million over this season unless GMDW has some blackmail or voodoo magic, and 3 of them are RFAs, but Necas and Drury can file for arbitration so we’d have to plan for that. One or two of them would probably be going to Columbus in a hypothetical trade too which would solve that question for us. But I’d rather have $5.7 million in cap space to try and bring as many of them back as we can than have 3 NHL-caliber starting goalies with 2 of them on M-NTCs.

I really enjoyed the BBQ and poboys when I visited Raleigh, maybe he’ll like it as well?

He is one of the options available, and one of the more realistic to attain in a trade in my opinion. And while 5.4 seems a bit steep, if he’s putting up solid numbers on a bad team, we can assume they’d stay consistent or improve in front of one of the best defensive teams in the league. While I appreciate what both Andersen and Raanta have done for the team, I think it’s time for the front office to start looking at alternative solutions. This isn’t the first time they’ve caused the team to go into a goalie frenzy, and this time Kochetkov isn’t around to bail them out.

  11. Real mediocre goaltender that isn’t starter material and is way too expensive as a backup. He was good for two seasons when CBJ played very tight defense and since then hasn’t shown much at all. I don’t think he’s better than Mrazek and at 5.4M each of the next 3 yrs? A big hell no.
