Conor Geekie major penalty for illegal check to the head – Have your say!
Conor Geekie started the game off with a real bang by drilling Samuel Schindler. He drew a major penalty and a game misconduct for this hit. Was that too much? Have your say!
Head principal point of contact – check, No attempt to play the puck – check, launched into hit – check. Refs had no choice but to call a major penalty. Although the German player needs to play with his head up.
slow the speed down to 0.25. The german player lets go of the puck he sees geekie coming from a mile away and by now knows he is going to get hit. He gets caught admiring his pass. Because he is stopping and passing he has turned and put his own head in vulnerable position. Sure geekie makes contact with the head but much like in the Sweden game turning puts you in a vulnerable position when the hit gets finished. Later on in the game Poitras head gets buried in the boards and all that comes of that is a 2min minor for boarding…… There is some serious ref concerns in this tournament now a days
Tough call? That is an easy call. That hit was as clean as it could be with zero intent. Only reason contact was made with the head was the defending player taking avoidance measures as he should have. It’s a fast game, asking a player that is already well committed to the hit to try and track a players final avoidance movement is ridiculous. If that is a major and game misconduct then this is officially a non-contact sport.
The contact is what made him leave his feet I paused it right as it was (Bicep to Head) and the right skate was still completely on the ice along with the tip of the left skate so when contact was made he was not in the air🤷🏼♂️
Also it can’t be charging seeing that he Coasted into him he never skated through him so what are we calling?
"The principal point of contact is the head." Full stop. Simple. Yup, a major penalty. An unfortunate occurrence for a couple of reasons, but the correct call nonetheless.
I never thought I'd see the day when a German is the midget against a Canadian. If he was taller that's a clean hit all day. Geekie was the victim of genetics on this one. I agree with the major penalty but ejection is ridiculous. Kid is playing hard for his country, he isn't a head hinter like Tom Wilson.
I think it was a bad call as the hit didn't result in serious injury, concussion, or blood drawn.
In other words, Geekie should have got a minor and 10 minutes misconduct, not a major and Game Misconduct.
Usually, under IIHF and NHL rules, to incur a Major or Match Penalty, the hit or infraction has to result in serious injury, a concussion, or blood drawn, and the hit was malicious.
Secondly, IIHF penalties seem to be biased against Canadians as a German player delivered a hit on Piotras, which resulted in injury and gets a minor penalty while Geekie delivers a hit that doesn't result in injury and gets a Game Misconduct.
Too bad officials can't be fired for giving bad or biased calls like they do in the CFL.
People always say the head was targeted, that's just bull shit, at that speed your targeting the body, it really depends on how the person your hitting positions there body, I played for years an I know how this works, so everyone who thinks they know can shut the fuck up
Parents, please teach your kids never to crouch forward and lead with their head at the last second when there is a hit coming straight at them! Schindler is very lucky to skate away from that.
Funny how many people can't use their eyes or brain. You don't have to LIKE the call BUT the video evidence is literally there, that he DOES smoke the guy straight in the head with his shoulder and DOES leave his feet AND the player that he hit doesn't have the puck. I can't believe how many people watch the game or video and somehow are in denial or literal reality. Got nothing to do with right vs wrong, like vs dislike.. my comment is purely "reality is what happened and we have video evidence" vs "people who deny reality when there is video evidence." Humans are amazing
Hitting is apart of the game and the attempt to remove hitting and fighting by the leagues in the past decade is disgustting. Theyre trying to micro manage player health with penalties and it is making the game soft and resemble pond hockey more and more.
Nobody wants players hurt but there are just too many variables in height, stance, speed, lean, and the sheer mechancis of a player being hit and falling down which will drag their head into the shoulder that prove the way the head contact rule as written and inforced is solely designed to remove the grit and physical play of hockey.
The fact the nhl will not hire refs who play past 18-21 means you get mid tier players with no experience at high levels of play trying to ref the best players with no deep understanding of the game and when a call is bad because of reasonable variables.
To the "stop living in the past crew" stop trying to make the game soft like its pond hockey because you cant keep your head up at speed while playing the puck.
It’s sad because it often depend of the outcome! If the targeted player get back up and continue to play it’s a 2 min but if he stays on the ice unconscious it’a a suspension …
Whst am i missong? Full strides followrd up with contact to the head? Yupp a 5 min major. International.tournament? Yupp a suspension fpr.the tournament. Its not a league. Lol

… and he left his feet.
I think major is the right call, he definitely jumped into the hit rather than driving through the body
Lmao TSN said no penalty. That’s clearly head contact
3 out of 5 Troubas. Definitely a charge, check to the head, take your pick, pick both. Definitely 5 and game to me.
Bullshiznit IIHF call. Canadians deal with these referees in every IIHF game.
Didn’t realize they handed out penalties for hitting too hard
Forget leaving your feet, forget charging, it’s all irrelevant. Head contact…..
Geekie again…seems like a dirty player…
1 game suspension. 2 if in NHL with no history. 6 if your last name is Wilson…

Clean as they come in the NHL. Can’t speak for IIHF, I’m no expert in their rules.
Principal point of contact is the head, major penalty all day, easy call.
penalized for being the taller player in a hit

Clean hit to me💯
Keep yer head up kid.
T😊
unfortunately… Clean as it looks at slo mo. Officials always look at point of contact.
He jumped … game ejection … fine with it
Nothing good about this hit. Everything wrong with it. How are we still thinking this way?
Stright up garbage. Penalty because the opposing play didnt keep his head up. IIHF is so soft.
What’s so tough call?
No intention to the puck, learn IIHF rules…
"The principal point of contact is the head." Full stop. Simple. Yup, a major penalty. An unfortunate occurrence for a couple of reasons, but the correct call nonetheless.
If the german was a little taller it would have a normal hit 😢

Don't put yourself in a vulnerable position, head up!

Well, Can't blame Geekie…It's in his DNA.
I think the German kid got off easy, his ancestors were traditionally getting the bad end of a bayonette when they were face to face with a Canadian.
I would like to see you try to squat at that speed while making sure you dont hit the head first 😅

looks very similar to the hit rasmus andersson laid on patrick laine a few months ago.

Are you not allowed to check a 5’7” kid as a 6’4” athlete?
I dont think this is an intentionally dirty hit he definitely hits him in the head first but thats purely because Geekie is 6 inches taller than him…
Swedish ref making call, why a Swede ref doing a Swede game,Ericsson, quite obvious
J3 never played hockey

This game is getting so pussified.
Bunch of babies in the comments. Easy to see whos never played hockey and who has. Most of you should stick to tennis or golf
