  1. What is there to debate? Nylander's putting up even better numbers than Matthews and he had to wait 3-5yrs to get the same money from the other big 3 players. If the Leafs don't think he's worth it, then don't sign him, cuz it's a lot better than telling people that Nylander should take Aho/Tkachuk money and randomly give discounts. Did Matthews take a discount…? Did Matthews take Aho or Tkachuk money?

  2. Of course they are going to overpay – $11.5 a year.

The Leafs haven't won a stanley cup since man landed on the moon…this is not magically going to be their year!

They are losers. 1 playoff series won in 7 years….better overpay the losers. Since they accomplished NOTHING.

By giving Nylander a contract more valuable than Kucherov, Pastrnak, or Draisaitl basically guarantees in a cap era that you will NEVER win. So yes, of course the Leafs will overpay. That's how they operate, perpetual losing for 50 years.

  3. Whatever the Leafs do, you’ll see an entire army of obsessed haters that will change their tune. If the Leafs didn’t sign him and he landed on another team they’d be like “Leafs lost”. They sign him and they say “Leafs lost”. This is what happens when you’re Canada’s team and you trigger small market fanbases. Comes with the territory.

Hope to see the Leafs lift the cup and make the haters cry even more. 😂

  4. Why is his contract National headlines. They've been overpaying players for years now and thats not news worthy.

  5. is this the new name? The Core 5!
Aye dios mio. The only team to have 4 players ( if he signs) over 10M.
I get that he is putting up the numbers and he has produced in the playoffs
but the Leafs should have dangled Nylander before to get help on D.
The salary of MMT alone handcuffed them and for some fans
not being able to see it, and accept it boggles my mind!
YOu wonder why we have problems on D and the goalie position?

  6. Perfect example why the leafs will NEVER EVER win the cup. Look at the game sheet tonight. NOT 1 CHECK BY THE FORWARDS of the leafs. They will NEVER win the cup. No chance at all. Regular season cash cows is all they are.

  7. Not worth $11.5×8. NO WAY. Very scary for the Leafs future. All that money tied up for the new or old Willie? This season has been great but what about the past several years? His track record has been on average, OK. Not $92 FREAKN MILLION!!!!!!!!!

  8. The Winnipeg Jets took first place in the league and Sportnets biggest headlines are “Nylander is probably gonna sign a contract soon maybe?” and “Bedard has a boo-boo” đŸ€”

  9. I want info on the no trade clause & the structure of his payout.

Developing nylander into a $11.5 mil player then letting him go at $6.9 million value is stupidity.

They have to sign him or they leave over $4.5 million of value on the table.

Currently nylander has a 10-team no trade list. What will his new no-trade clause look like?

any one of these high paid guys traded could bring in an entire back end.. Toronto is setting his value

They have to pay him that amount, whether he is their player or an asset

we don't know whether he's staying or going

  10. No other team in the NHL would give Nylander 11.5 million a year for 8 years plus a full no movement/no trade. Rumor is he wants more. Toronto should trade him. However he currently has a 10 team no trade deal. So that is a problem. If I were the GM I would let him walk or find a way to trade him.

  11. Leafs have a history of over paying . Which has led to five players eating up 50% of their cap. A strategy that has not improved their dismal record of one playoff round victory in 15 years. This is not the solution for success.

Then why is the new leaf's gm is repeating the same mistakes. Next will be a huge bump in pay for Marner. As long as the fans keep on buying into it. Why change?

  12. JT and Marner will be in contract talks next season and I suspect that JT will be offered much less, Marner's is harder to guess at, at the moment.

  13. One of the few things Dubas got terribly wrong was contracts. Lou taught him that “if you have time use it” but that backfired with Marner and his contract. Most people don’t remember that there was a time Marner was struggling on the 4th line playing with Matt Martin. It was known Marner would have signed for 8×8 but, Dubas and the Leafs waited, signed Matthews, Marner became a star and copied Matthews taking a shorter term deal at way more money. If Dubas held strong with Marner he could have had him way cheaper. No chance Marner would have turned down 8×8 if Dubas said take it or hold out for the entire season. No player at that point in their career (2.5 years in) would sit out a whole year and pass on 8 million a year. He was to friendly with these players and it cost the Leafs. If Dubas was tougher on these kids then we could have kept guys like Hyman. Saving 3.5 for Marner, and offering long term deals earlier then later for a little less money to players like Hyman would have made this team better. Look at New Jersey, Ottawa, Edmonton. Jack Hughes, Stutzle, Tkachuk, Driseitl. When you draft someone in the top 5 and you see them everyday you know they are gonna be good. Offer them 8×8 as soon as possible and before they become superstars and you will save yourself a ton of money. Those teams were smart. Dubas and Leaf’s were not. The best window for the Leafs is when they had Mason Marchment, Carter Verhagee, Jared McCann and guys like that. They were making no money and would have been a great 3rd 4th line. Instead they were let go for nothing because we had no money left over. It’s torture being a Leaf’s fan. The End
..

  14. Hmmm drawing blood used to be a call but they took it out then they make players wear visors in the name of saftey. But if the visor cut you your out of luck yeah right.
