Hextall admits he hated Flyers when they drafted him
Leah Hextall sat down with her cousin, Philadelphia Flyers GM Ron Hextall, to chat about his team’s performance this year and his surprising initial thoughts on joining the organization in his draft year.
One of the oft forgotten details of Ron's start with the Flyers is who/what he followed…the Pelle Lindbergh era, which ended tragically the year before in the wreckage of Pelle's Porsche. Pelle was, by far, the most popular Flyer of my childhood, and was rapidly ascending to become the best Philly goalie of all-time, a position occupied up to that point by Bernie Perent. Then it all when up in flames. All of us Philly fans were absolutely devastated. We were convinced that all was lost, and nobody would ever fill Pelle's shoes….then came Ron Hextall. I always wondered how that, if at all, weighed on Ron when he began with the Flyers. To what extent was he aware of the awesome vacuum he was charged with filling.
I imagine a guy like Hextall knows mostly hate. He couldn't control his anger in the NHL and no doubt has many memories of negative attitude towards people and organizations that he can draw on.

Jim Kelly didn't want to play for the Buffalo Bills either. Remember the New Jersey Generals?
