In our last episode of 2023, things seem much the same for the Detroit Red Wings as they did 12 months ago…
Tune in as we open by recapping Detroit 3 most recent games, including an insane 7-6 win over Philadelphia, Patrick Kane remaining hot, losses to New Jersey and Minnesota, Derek Lalonde’s squad falling apart on defense, Reimer’s struggles in net with Lyon and Husso still out (and Hutchinson stepping in), Simon Edvinsson being called up, Moritz Seider and Jake Walman playing tough minutes, Larkin – DeBrincat – Kane being the only good line while the likes of Raymond – Compher – Fabbri struggled, and LOTS more (4:00).
Next, a big, honest conversation about how Detroit got to this point, what’s next for Steve Yzerman’s squad, whether Simon Edvinsson being sent back down was a mistake, Patrick Kane being the best player in Hockeytown, the Red Wings’ search for another goalie, playoff hopes & more (15:10).
After that, NHL & hockey updates including Connor Bedard’s arrival, and Detroit Red Wings prospects at the World Juniors (Nate Danielson, Trey Augustine, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Anton Johansson, and Kevin Bicker) (50:35) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (58:25) – enjoy!

Wings cant play defense. What kills me is even watching the game and listening to the announcers saying how well this person is playing defense this year. B F ing S. Pinching at the wrong times over and over including Seider. He started the cause for the 2-3 goal last game and Walman finished it by doing nothing. Todays defensive game is DO NOTHING. Walman had another man covering the pass but let himself get push back into the net. WHO IS TRAINING THIS DEFENSE
Goaltending yes not great, but how can you be a goalie when your defense vision is 120 degrees. Why are 2 guys skating behind you like your a complete idiot.
Adding this, Lyon has earned the chance to carry the team
Bring back Mrazek now. If he does not solve the problem, You still have options coming before the trade deadline. Mrazek costs you nothing, but maybe offer something for the Hawks to keep some salary. Way better than Reimer
It'll be interesting to see if any of our ufa's wanna stay after this year even if we turn it around. Kane is 100% gonna want out; the others maybe stay.
Defense is the No1 issue but to build a Championship team you need 2 No1 Centers, 2 No1 Dmen and the Goalie, Wings have 1 Center right now.
Some might disagree but this is the measure, has been since the 90s
Lalonde's defensive system is garbage.
Danielson looks solid, but not at WHL level, their it has been average this year. Raymond was NEVER a scorer., His numbers were weak in Sweden, to many looking at potential that never showed in his actual numbers there.
Blackhawks fan here. We love Mrazek and I think he deserves a chance to be on a winning team/playoff team. You should make an effort to get him now before he goes to another team. He says he is better this season because he is healthy. He is very good. Just about all his wins are goalie wins and he has won 10 of our 12 wins.
Spiraling is right. Circling the drain.
Wow you guys dissed the Redwings for more than half the podcast. As Brad said, why send Edvinsson down and waive Hutchison. This sends a bad message to the locker room. Is Berggren next. I shake my head at how much this team's play has changed in 1 month.
Hey guys maybe Nedeljkovic is available. He has a respectable GAA OF 2.64 but a really good S% of .917. Look at who you're talking about bringing back Mrazek. It's not only our goalies It's our play in front of him in the offensive and defensive zone. If we don't fix that soon this team is done for another year. When you attach the offensive zone it can't be Holl and Chiarot. They need to stay back until this team can figure out where things have gone wrong.
Ottawa broke this team physically, mentally, and spiritually. It has nothing to do with Kane or his arrival; or how he has played (he’s on fire at the moment).
Seen enough bad play from Justin Holl not covering his man, not even looking around at pending players nearing our net. Not a great signing.
Jeff Petry, nostalgia signing, but really is not wowing anyone playing at 36 years old. Took a roster spot.
Probably the massive team indicator is emergency clearing the puck. The Red Wings just whack at it and it ends up on an opponents stick, puck in the net.
If they can't win either of these next two they might as well start selling and collecting what mediocre draft picks they can get. Stick a fork in 'em.
Kane's getting his pts, but at the cost of the locker room. Y-man out-smarted himself on that reach…
I dont care, the Red Wings and Pistons must be sacrificed so that the sport Gods will be appeaseed and let the Lions win a playoff game!
If I never see Reimer play another game, it’ll be too soon.
Anyone able to help me understand why we don’t ever seem to offer physical resistance to teams approaching the zone. I don’t I see very often finish checks. Please enlighten me as to the approach benefits to be a mostly hands off kind of team if there are any. It just seems to take away one of the ways to defend against the cycle. I rarely see hits as a team starts their breakout against us until they get into our D zone. Feels like they mostly get a free pass.
A few days ago Lalonde made several references to the Wings being "fragile". Well, fragile teams don't win Cups, and fragile teams get coaches fired. To me it was a shocking admission and a poor way to motivate the team. Yzerman must have burst a blood vessel when he heard that.
Montreal is about to pass us. Also starting to side-eye Lalonde here, they keep coming out unprepared and just look like nothing has changed. This wasn't just a December thing, they had flashes of this awful play earlier in the season against the Kraken and the Jets. They were living on the edge for a while and now the scoring depth has blown up so we can't hide it anymore.
Lalonde isn’t the guy. The roster has obvious flaws but even a flawed team should be capable of playing sound defensive hockey. Fire the coach before the Wings set the never ending rebuild back another two years.
…Is it a wise idea to have a podcast sponsored by a beer when the team it covers is playing as erratically as the Wings? Not that I object, it's better than sports gambling garabage, but still. Don't just drive me to drink, put the bottles in my hand! Haha.
As for Edvinsson, "he's going to save the team" is absolutely the position people were, and in some cases still are, taking with the kid. Yes, if a player sucks, they should sit, but the biggest problem is the idea that adding one player will put us over the top. It's exhausting.
