@Colorado Avalanche

This is a BRUTAL way to call out your team

A week after Mikko Rantanan called out Artturi Lehkonen’s dad, we now have Devon Toews calling out his team in one of the most brutally honest ways I’ve seen. The Colorado Avalanche rolled into Chicago to play a Blackhawks last placed team on a 4 game losing streak, a club they should beat. Yet, it didn’t exactly play out that way. Bedard had a great game, Mrazek played well and the Avalanche just couldn’t stay out of the box in the 3rd period hurting themselves bad. Miles Wood got a game misconduct, Johansson got a late period penalty after MacKinnon was hit hard by Blackwell that caused a scrum and led to Johansson getting a misconduct as well. All of this led to a postgame interview unlike many. Devon Toews flat out called out his team mates saying only 14 of 20 guys are playing how they should adding “It’s frustrating to… play out there when you got guys that think they’re playing well and they’re doing things that, you know, you have no idea what play they’re gonna make”. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

  1. I think he should have talked to those people directly in the locker room instead of blasting them in an interview. There has been too much drama in the NHL recently.

  2. Chicago is learning , and they got rid of some dead weight Perry.
This didn’t surprise me whatsoever. Chicago is turning things around .

  3. Rantanen does look like shit this season and Devon Toes is awful with the puck. He has wiffed more shots than anyone I've ever seen in a long time. Everytime Toes gets the puck I know he's going to screw it up

  4. Well if you make that kind of money you better play your a** off, people come to watch you guys play so no excuses

  5. Someone needs to step up and fill some big shoes in the locker. Its no secert Gabe is the heart of that team and with him not around the team doing his rehab to get healthy, someone needs to pull the team together. They are a much better team than the performances they are putting on right now

  6. The Avs are definitely not as strong as they were 2 years ago. Don't forget, not having Landeskog on the ice is a huge loss.

  7. What about Rantanen´s comment got to do with Avalanche? Absolutely nothing! The fact the words towards a person who happens to be a father of an another avalanche player does not make it a critisism of an avalanche team nor player. I really do not get how this is so hard to understand… Artturi Lehkonen´s father is not in any way part of the Avalanche organization as far as I know…

  8. As an Avs fan, I don't think the situation between Ismo and Mikko is a particularly big issue. Rantanen made it clear in a following interview that he and Artturi are good friends, he just wasn't a fan of Ismo saying that he didn't train as much over the summer and would prefer Ismo stuck to analyzing his on-ice play rather than his personal life.
In regards to Toews' comments, he's not wrong. There are a handful of guys that are guilty of either trying too hard and making dumb mistakes or not putting in enough effort and giving the opponent chances. I think it's especially noticeable in the D-core without Makar and Girard in the lineup since a lot of the depth is actually playing very well, however it feels like they might be a bit overconfident in trying to fill in for the big offensive shoes Makar and Girard have left leading to a lot more mistakes. The one exception to this is Bo Byram, who's just been having a bit of a rough patch lately and kinda seems to be gripping his stick a bit too hard and trying to hard, leading once again to more mistakes.

  9. If you listened to Bednar interview this morning on Altitude radio he did agree with Toews for calling out players. I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't lead to a players meeting. I actually might be bad but i was trying to figure out who the Avs passengers were. Avs definitely have some lazy players who possibly just want their paycheck. I have a few names I could mention but I won't.

  10. Watched these two teams play fifth game of yr. my 19 yr old said he couldn’t believe there could be such a difference of talent between two pro teams lol. Colorado killed them and the score was being very nice as marazak was great. I can’t believe this is the same two teams two months later

  11. This is a conversation that’s been had in the room. Bednar confirmed this is nothing that hasn’t been said in the locker room

  12. I feel like they are missing Landeskog really bad this season. Sometimes Avs play like they are the best team in the league and sometimes it seems like they are lazy and undisciplined especially defensively.

  13. Take it from a Devils fan, Miles Wood is love with that penalty bench! Toews' comments are spot on if you ask me… and at the moment the Avs look like a collection of top tier players, not a team 🤷‍♂

  14. The one thing that got missed is that Andrew Cogliano shared this same sentiment earlier this season in an interview. The core is saying the same thing and I’m sure they’re also saying it in the locker room beforehand

  15. I’m amazed at the amount of people applauding this. I actually can’t think of many ways to cause more division in your own locker room if you tried. “Maybe he already said this in private” just makes it worse imo.

If you’re one of the guys he’s not talking about, now you’re wondering how much you can really trust your own captain to have your back or take accountability himself. Will he air you out to the media one day? Will he decide you’re the problem next after one bad game? Will he hold himself to the same standard?

If you’re one of the guys he IS talking about, you’re either already aware of how you’re struggling or you now feel like you’ve had a target out on your back with the fans and media while your captain escapes any criticism.

  16. Saying it to the press is a cop out. If it means as much to you as you say it does, talk to those guys directly. Keep it in the team. You know? "Team"? Don't hang out your dirty laundry. Because that's just selfish and not teamwork in the slightest.

  17. It’s obvious to me, Bednar doesn’t have any control over the team! Or the players don’t listen to him. Leaving only one solution. They need a coaching change. Period!

  18. So was it one of his teammates fault that he wasn’t skating hard and let Reichel scores unmolested? Look in the mirror bud, you’re a far cry from a player to call out others…

  19. I think he was talking about the entire second line of wood,Colton and drouin..all new to the team this year.

  20. The extra activity was not because of the hit on Mac.

Murphy cross checked Drouin in front of the net. After the whistle Drouin gave him a shove and the rest unfolded.

  21. To be fair, and it doesn’t need to be public or anything, Lehk’s dad owes Mikko an apology. There are certain acceptable things to yell at / say about pro athletes. But something that is more personal or hateful or targeted (especially when said via the media)? Not okay. They might be pros but they’re still people.

  22. That was a good callout. Devon Toews is one of the best all around defensemen in the NHL. The rest of the team needs to focus on their tenacity because Chicago brought that tenacity. Look at Donato on that goal. Do you know what I mean?
