John McCain funeral: Renee Fleming performs ‘Danny Boy’
Opera singer Renee Fleming performs a moving rendition of “Danny Boy” at the funeral of Senator John McCain on the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday.
Thank you for allowing us to witness Johnâs service. His request for Renee Fleming to sing Danny Boy was emotionally stirring. The song is about love and loss but also remembrance..Itâs story is our story, a universal lament that has personal resonance for all of us. Itâs mystical content allows the individual to interpret the experience and make it their own.The communication between two people Connected in life and now separated at journeys end, creates an invisible yet tangible force only understood by those involved in the Intensity of the experience. The words are achingly beautiful, the pathos palpable. In many ways, it represents a summary of johnâs life in song. R.I.P.
( I adapted the passage from my story about Danny Boy , as a mark of respect and gratitude )
In a forgotten chapter of the composition of Danny Boy, the tune was actually suggested by a musical and artistic Irish-American Catholic woman by the name of Margaret Enright Weatherly, sister-in-law of the British lyricist, Frederic Weatherly. The lyricist had already composed the words, but did not have suitable music. The music he had didnât do justice to the words. However, Margaret knew of an old Irish tune that she then adapted for use with these words which in turn were further adapted to the tune. Margaret was never given the credit she deserved by her brother-in-law, perhaps another mournful note to ponder as we listen to this beautiful piece of music.
Madame Fleming is the preeminent American soprano…..even now that she is no longer in her prime. This woman is an artist beyond words. If there is anything beyond death, Sen McCain would surely have smiled upon hearing this.
A hero who will never be forgotten. There's one thing that impressed me about this man he said what was on his mind with complete passion and he was a tough individual and was well able to take criticism from Trump the reason why he was a hero and will always be. Rest in peace John.
It has been 4 years since John McCain has died. Obama was a decent President. But I sense the past years of Republican's chaos and divisiveness would not have occurred if McCain had been elected.
Mr McCain deserved a state funeral of course. What a brave man he was! From a purely vocal point of view, I think Ms Fleming was awful. For Americaâs lead soprano to sing O Danny Boy using her belting technique instead of her full bloom lyric and gorgeous instrument was a very poor choice ( in my view at least) I suppose it had something to do with the fact it coincided with her Broadway appearance in Carrousel and that took a huge toll in her voice but still she should have been capable of doing much better than this.

Stunning. As it should be sung.
