The holiday break can’t come soon enough for the Detroit Red Wings.
Tune in as we recap two more ugly losses for Derek Lalonde’s squad, including thoughts on DeBrincat’s 2 power play goals being the only bright spot in Anaheim, Patrick Kane looking better but the team playing worse, Kostin & Husso joining Lyon on IR leaving Reimer and Hutchinson in net, why Steve Yzerman won’t bring up Simon Edvinsson or Jonatan Berggren, the whole team being tired & hurt, & lots more in this…not so cheery discussion (4:30).
Next, Dylan Larkin’s comments regarding NHL Player Safety and his incident with Joseph and the Ottawa Senators (33:55), as well as more on David Perron’s suspension appeal & Detroit Red Wings going to the World Juniors (Danielson, Augustine, Sandin Pellikka, Johansson, & Bicker (43:40).
After that, NHL news including D.J. Smith being fired by Tkachuk’s Ottawa Senators, Amazon potentially getting in on Bally Sports, & more (47:00) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (53:40) – enjoy!

A rough stretch eh? Can we have a goalie steal a game?
I understand the team is dealing with injuries at every position other than defense, but at what point does Lalonde get put in the hot seat? I honestly foresee us losing out in the month of December (with maybe 2-3 points at most) unless either Lyon or Husso return sooner than later. How many losses will it take for the Wings to make a coaching change?
Is it too early to start talking about the 2024 draft?
Well this is almost a mirror season to last year.
I am over Rasmussen at this point.
Merry Xmas boyz… know wings r in tough shape… but I guess at this point Al we can do is improve. 🍻✌🏾
They'll be done by mid January. Time to focus on the next draft and trying to sell what we can.
God I hope Lalonde doesn't have a 8 season leash. We might need a Berube type.
This shit continues to happen to Larkin, guaranteed he’ll choose family and retirement by the time he’s 30 or 32 tops
Happy holidays to everyone! Thanks again for all of the content to help keep us sane (moderately) during this rebuild! I truly look forward to your episodes each week.
That said, It's been hard to watch the
wheels fall off lately. Here are a few of my optimistic opinions headed into the new year. If anyone has any others add them to the list!
1- it's better to have the injury bug and "collaspe" stretch of games now than at the end of the year.
2- Patrick Kane looks better than expected. With Perron coming back veterans like them can help get the room back on the same page.
3- as disappointed as I am with the teams luck and performance since getting kane, I think back to a quote from him before he signed saying he wants to go somewhere he is needed. We sure need him now, both on and off the ice. Maybe that helps boost Kanes moral knowing he can be the impact he wanted to be again.
4- maybe Husso will get back to form (aka anything less than 4 goals a game) after he comes back from injury.
They called up Czarnik when Kostin went out. You don't fill in a role when there's an injury, you fill in a roster spot. Berggren can play in the top 6 and they can move someone down to the 4th line to replace Kostin. Rasmussen is the obvious option.
The real issue is that this team can't seem to play Lalonde's system consistently. We've seen it work many times. But where is the team that completely shut down NewJersey or Boston back in November? They didn't just look different in the last several games, they look hopelessly lost. Doing so many stupid things, teams cutting through them like butter, constantly passing when they need shots on goal. It's like a mind virus has infected the team. They're just playing fundamentally bad hockey. Lalonde needs to find a way to drill the right way to play into their heads.
They never play with any urgency. Everything looks difficult for them. Passes just out of reach, poor forecheck, turnovers in the neutral zone, no hitting/checking, everybody chasing puck in defensive zone, losing puck battles along boards, no one seems to be in right place when they need to be there. They look so discombobulated. I cant explain it well…like everything is scrambled…they have no flow, everything looks so difficult for them. This is very poor hockey they are playing. Its extremely frustrating watching them. Walman is absolutely playing worst hockey. Whenever they play they dont play like they want to win. They just kinda cruise on auto pilot. I see no hussle to outwork the opponent. Yzerman needs to have a talk with this coach, Im starting to wonder about him. Still dont see much physicality or hitting/checking. They are way to soft. And I mean soft. There boys. We need men. Lalonde is soft also. There just mediocre as fuck. So sick of it the last several seasons. Just average, streaky, mediocre, boring hockey. This team is going nowhere. Even when they score 5 they find a way to lose. There toast
As of today, Detroit officially has the best prospect pool in the NHL. If you base all prospects graduating after 25 NHL games.
I honestly think Lalondes system is hand cuffing some of our players pure talets from coming out
Tonight on the Whine Wheel Podcast..
OHHH WHOOAAA WHOAAAA OHH OHH OHH 😡
We all knew they were overachieving. What's the surprise? Im a little sad but I knew it was too good to be true. I just wanted to feel good a while. They don't have a starting goalie and giving Hronek away was a bad move.
Strategically it is advantageous to be the dirty team and try to hurt the other team. You are hurt less, and penalized less.
