Beyond the point, but it FEELS a lot longer than “12 years” because at no point in the previous playoff appearances (first round exits against Philadelphia and Boston) did it feel like we were legitimate Cup Contenders. Yes, there’s always a chance at a magical run by getting in, but it has felt like we’ve been REALLY waiting since 2007 IMO. The whole McDavid-Eichel tank originated because the franchise came to terms with the need for top-tier talent. Getting in and getting bounced had gotten old. Would I love to get in and break the drought this season? Absolutely. But the ultimate sign of being back will be when we feel confident that we can really make a deep run year in and year out. Here’s hoping it happens soon.
