YES. He didn’t even do shit the last time we played Boston. Everyone was finally expecting him to rock shit ass MARCHAND, and he didn’t 🙁

  2. publicbigguns

It almost feels like the guy is tanking himself on purpose.

  3. DaisyFeeder

He talks like a tough guy, then gets out there and plays like a ballerina.

He genuinely plays like a guy trying to move up to the fourth or third line…memo to Reaves…it aint gonna happen.

I guess it’s worth getting a better look at a few of the younger guys now that we aren’t up against the cap. I’m not sure Steeves, Abruzzesi, Holmberg, etc will move the needle but I don’t think it hurts to try.

Counterpoint: it was never time to start the Ryan Reaves experiment.

  6. FrostyAnalysis

It should have never been started in the first place. That was the first data point of the new GM’s reprehensible talent evaluation.

  7. If only there was some way to know he was bad *before* giving him lots of money!

  8. Good for Ryan for getting that contract and securing himself some financial security but now its times to #packyourshit and never see the ice again in a leafs uniform.

  9. Hathaway would’ve been the dream. Maybe target him and Sanheim.

Shower thought: if we lose Reaves, possibly the top fighter in the league, won’t that drop us down quite a few notches on the toughness scale? I fear we’d go back to Matthews being rag dolled around, and the forward core in general being scared again. In a cruel twist, what if we lose him to Florida?!

None of Treliving’s signings have worked out. People bitched about Dubas, especially in the end, but the replacement has been awful so far. This team isn’t as good as it was last year. D is much worse and the forwards are pretty much the same despite the additions and changes. Showing again that a major change is needed with the core.

Klingberg was stupid from the beginning. Just really, really dumb. I get that Treliving wanted offence from the blue line, but it was so obvious that this guy wasn’t going to be the answer. Even without the injury, the trajectory of his career has been pointing straight down for a while. Even healthy, though, this guy wasn’t a good fit.

Bertuzzi hasn’t found his place on the roster. He’s basically a third-liner, but Treliving seemed to expect he was getting something much more to augment the top lines.

Domi was wildly oversold when he was signed. Dunno if people thought he was a sniper a tough guy because of his last name or what. But there’s a reason why he doesn’t stick with a team. He’s mostly invisible.

Reaves just made zero sense. He’s here on a retirement contract. He’s not adding any toughness or presence at all.

It was time to end it well over a month ago.

  13. The experiment is over. The tough guy attitude on the ice hasn’t really developed. Keefe doesn’t coach that way and Tre didn’t really understand the core or the culture enough to have underestimated what a fourth liner would bring.

He maybe a good locker room guy but again he’s almost a generation older, so the young guys don’t see him in their clique.

He is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. And since he doesn’t fit he’s done.

    IT’S SIMPLE MATH FOLKS:

DO WE WIN HOCKEY GAMES WHEN HE PLAYS?

    NO, WE DO NOT!

WE DO NOT WIN WHEN REAVES IS IN THE LINEUP.

    WAKE UP TRELIVING.

    THE EXPERIMENT IS OVER.

Compare Bunting and Kerfoot w Domi and Bert I think it’s about even. Reavo can play against bigger slow teams Florida for example. And provide a presence just being on the bench. Go leafs. Go

Tre has done most things right on paper as a GM this offseason. He got some decent free agents that most of us thought were very favourable at the time, including justifying the need for Reaves. Like with Kyle Dubas, I appreciate an active and involved GM.

We’re in December now and I think it’s a good enough sample size to say, yes we need to end the experiment. He is not effective, even from a physical stand point. 7 minutes a game, averaging 2 hits is just not enough.

Some of you don’t quite understand what his worth is and the tangibles he brings aside from expecting him throwing punches and crushing hits every 6 minutes he plays in every single game.

    Let’s take a step back.

If you haven’t been watching this team for the last 3-5 years, they need a police man with the type of non-confrontational characters we have on our top lines.
Too much skill and money at the top without an enforcer. We need it. They have to be there for presence. Without that enforcer, you get cheap shots and possible injuries to our top guys.

Locker room presence, some fans snub that but ask any player who’s been in the game. It’s important to the team. Did you guys not see their reactions when Reaves scored his first goal as a Leaf? The bench went beyond nuts. They like this guy. He gives them an extra inch in their height. That matters.

People need to slow their role on the expectations with Reaves. First off it’s regular season, we shouldn’t expect him to go guns out every single regular season game. I don’t want him to go head hunting every single game. As long as he can keep the puck out of the net when he’s on, and yes he struggled at the beginning of season with this, but as long as it’s improved, that’s ok.

He’s important in post-season when morale can be devastated by a hard loss.

He’s important to police the opposing team.

And hopefully not let any goals in lol….

He’s been here for a quarter of a season.
How about we give him a full season and most importantly, a post-season to see how it pans out.

    Give him some slack.

One tough player doesn’t automatically make the team harder to play against. The team just isn’t tough enough.

People will bitch that Reaves sat on the bench and did nothing when Marchand took out Lilly and in the same breath say you cant put him on ice at the same time as Marchand because its a guaranteed goal against.

So what is he supposed to do then? Keefe has to actually play him if he’s expected to respond to hits or be an enforcer. Maybe Marchand wouldn’t have got the OT winner if Reaves had just kept hitting him all game, wearing him out. It probably would have helped if Keefe had played more than 6 guys for the whole 5 mins, but that’s a different topic

Reaves had his opportunity to show his worth when they played the Panthers.

    Very disappointing outcome.

  21. ElephantShell34

The fact is, we can’t be going down to 11 forwards for the 2nd half of every close game. When he’s putting in 5 minutes or less on a consistent basis it’s just too much for the other guys.
