In 1995 the Leafs were playing Vancouver and Gino Odjick was taking liberties with Doug Gilmour. As the story goes, Wendel Clark went over to Pavel Bure and told him if Gino touches Dougie again "I'm going to take YOUR fucking head off." And for the rest of the game after that Odjick left Gilmour alone.
Point is Reaves doesn't have to go after Marchand for the hit. Go after anyone. Send a message to BOSTON that you won't be pushed around. In 2006 Donald Brashear (Washington) fought Brendan Shanahan (Rangers) and Shanny's teammate Colton Orr was NOT happy. If Brashear wants to fight someone it should be Orr not a star (all be it a very tough star) like Brendan Shanahan.
On his next shift Colton Orr went straight to Alex Ovechkin, cross checked him in the face, and knocked a few of his teeth out. The message to the opposing team's bench is that YOU ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE for anyone's actions and your beating and blood will be on your own teammates hands. If you want to step out of line and get your teammate beat up, do it………….. I dare you.
That's what Ryan Reaves is on this team for. Looking pretty while he's squaring off and flexing to the crowd don't accomplish anything. Brett Hull once said Tony Twist was so intimidating that he could have a cardboard cut out of him on the bench and that would be enough to deter anyone from taking liberties.
This is a league full of p*ssies. A guy like Reaves should easily be able to intimidate an entire bench full of guys who punch like they're swinging purses. Ask Keefe to put him on in the first 3 minutes of the game and then go run the goalie. You don't have to BLAST HIM but knock him down and dare that entire bench to do something about it. Make Sure Simon Benoit is in the lineup as well and get to it.
NO optics..get away from optics. use your platform to change people to do their own DD. Train the masses to not be so dumb.
I'd think that Reaves lost the room at one point! Sure the other players were happy to have him on the team early and were saying all the right things publicly but I guess they grew tired of how he was vocal player and him being the 4th line guy possibly rubbed them the wrong way. All speculation of course, but when the Leafs were not standing up for each other was very telling. The moment he sat out the 4th line did well, Domi, and Gordiano dropped the gloves to defend their teammates. They showed some fight with him out of the lineup. They went on to win 4 in a row and they put Reaves back in the lineup, he scores and they lose to Chicago!
