  1. As long as it has Carolina as last it is probably accurate.

Note that it says this measures quality over quantity. The coaches and players say the Canes strategy is “Pucks on Net” and limiting opposing teams pucks on net.

If you don’t have a play or a pass “pucks on net”. They are about quantity over quality to overwhelm the goalie.

Canes lead the league for shots on goal per game (34.6) and also lead in shots against per game (24.6)

Not saying this is the best strategy, but this is what they are going for, and they do good at it.

  3. The thing is, whenever this team tries to play off script, we look terrible. Us fans hate that we shoot non dangerous shots all game long, but whenever that try to make fancy passing plays, they usually don’t work. We get the occasional tic-tac-toe play from the likes of Aho and company, but for the most part, whenever we don’t play to our super simplistic, dump n chase shoot from everywhere system, we look terrible.

The canes don’t have a pure goal scorer on the team!! We have a bunch of fucking centers playing anything but CENTER

We’ve scored the most goals in the division so far it’s our goals allowed I’m more concerned about

How’s that working out for the Oilers?

I believe it. I don’t think our strategy is wrong, I just think we’ve got too many cookies in one jar. If pucks on net is your priority, that’s going to degrade your shot selection. It’s not a horrible strategy, we’ve been quite successful with it, but it’s like having a really nice entree and no sides, no appetizers, no dessert, and no drink.

We need to be able to mix in some creativity in opening up the net with our quantity over quality strategy. Every above average goalie knows that we’re going to take the shot even if it’s not a great one. We won’t make them cross the crease very often, we don’t pose enough of a threat to make them stay on their skates for long, and we don’t shoot up high nearly enough.

Most of our goals are up high, or from the puck popping into the net amidst some netfront chaos, or from a good rebound, or from an unexpected but well-placed and timed passes. We need to be able to bait and confuse goalies. We need to be able to catch them off-guard. It’s like for 95% of the shots we take, we’re banking on the hope that the goalie’s read is bad or slow. Or that they aren’t fast enough to save it. And when they’re good at reading and reacting, it doesn’t work.

For example, in the BJ’s game, Orlov spontaneously decided to fake a dump from the redline, smacked the puck at the net, and almost caught Merzlikins sleeping. He saved it, but not without nearly shitting his pants. That’s the kind of creativity I want to see more of. Just do something unexpected. Confuse the goalie. Surprise him. Bait him. Don’t just shoot the same half assed shot over and over hoping the dude just fucks up eventually.

Is this the first time y’all are watching Canes hockey? As long as Rod is the coach we will be at or near the bottom in any offensive quality ranking. It’s their identity and the game they play.

We have more goals scored per game than 7 of the top 8 teams on that chart.
