Its a disgrace he wasnt instantly banned from every rink on earth. Disgraceful and disgusting hes still allowed to play. Fucking GROSS.
As a Canadian who grew up playing hockey and watching the game my whole life, never seen a play like this. Looks like involuntary manslaughter to me. He planted his right leg to transfer his weight so he could raise the left skate to kick/hit him and slow him down. No excuse for having the skate as high as he did. Blades on the skate are sharp as razors. I am sure he never intended to cause death but it was extremely reckless. Hope there is justice for Adam.
The guy is a killer.
Sydney Crosby said it was a freak accident even though he played with the deceased. What a creep!
I’m shocked how stupid you are for thinking it was a “ freak accident”.
Finally, he's been charged with manslaughter
I wonder if the roles were reversed would he have been arrested sooner? 🫣
No accident, that was very reckless and they should lock him up
That what he gets for being stupid. He did that 💩 on purpose
I don't want to see Matt Petgrave in Prison for 10 years but my Gosh the kick was absolutely intentional…
Nwords will be Nwords
If this had happened down at the park skating rink with a couple of grade school kids,
then I can understand not filing charges.. BUT that A hole MP is a professional skater,
and he knew exactly what he was doing. LOCK HIM UP FOR LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Free him he’s innocent
It was intentional, him dying was not
He definitely tried to kick him more to trip him or hit him in the chest to slow him down but I don't think he intended to kill him or even hit him in the neck. He should be banned from EVER playing hockey again being charged with man slaughter is quite far fetched. In the USA it would be impossible to get a conviction but the UK is really wierd I've seen ppl goto jail just for a funny tweet or post somewhere so I don't know how this will play out over there
I'm from sheffield and a steelers fan, but this was horrendous, I can see the charge being dropped to involuntary manslaughter,
This is actually the perfect example of Manslaughter where intentions don't matter. What's unfortunate is people taking up for him claiming he's the victim when the other person involved is dead.
He recieves a standing ovation at his first game back after the incident ,I wish I could have written accident instead of incident .I can understand the guy needing support ,sadly he has it to live with for the rest of his life ,only he knows what he was thinking at the time .In a fast pace tough game where decisions have to be made in a split second but to me it looked extremely dangerous and reckless especially once those blades leave the ice anything can happen.A terrible terrible tragedy for everyone In the Hockey World family.
I always see 95% comments saying it looked to be intentional ..But its weird that sport's wars and Black and white sports seem to thinks it didn't look intentional ..Why are these two and more programs seeing this different ? This is a Dirty player and either way needs to pay for killing another person ..Totally Intentional
He shouldn't be playing hockey because of his history and this incident. Honestly I think he needs to go to jail cause he didn't need to lift his leg that high. That's stupid. He needs to repent and beg Jesus for mercy on the victim and his family. Also, please make the players wear neck and face gear… come on!
jailtime
Professional (and amateur) athletes are taught control of their bodies, to avoid injury mostly to themselves – but fellow athletes.
Do I think Petgrave woke up, thinking of murder? No. Do I think the hit was intentional? Yes. Do I think the jugular was the target? No.
But the video of Petgrave's kung-fu kick goes against the public narrative that this was a "freak accident."
I want to watch the video again
Bro that was more than intentional. You need to watch that clip again.
Um isn't this dude in the wrong sport
And all he has to say is he felt himself falling forward and as that began to happen he feet slid out from behind him.
And I be shocked if even one person on the jury would know how to skate. Let alone skate at that level.
This case will go nowhere and the prosecution knows it
I'm not sure if you could call it intentional, but it's beyond reckless.
He should be charged especially since he's known for being a dirty player. In a sport like hockey something like this bound to happen.
Your legs should never come that high off ground to someone’s neck not a accident that’s BS
He’ll get away with it because he’s black. It’s racist to punish black people for murdering in 2023.
Dude, tie a 1pound weight on your foot and try to lift it sideways intentionally. Now try running at someone and let your leg hit an object and fall. See how high your leg goes.
I don't think Petgrave intended to kill, but he did intend to put his skate blade into A.J. He was not hit in a manner that would flip him head-over-heels. At best, he clipped the skate of the man in front of him (though I doubt the contact here as the front player's skates do not move inward from impact). Inertia does not disappear because you are on ice. Contact with the player in front would have caused Petgrave's feet to stop forward momentum, propelling his UPPER body forward. His FEET would remain behind. The video clearly shows his feet ahead of his upper body. Any forward movement of the legs would be through intent.
The innocent explanation would be that he swung his leg out to retain balance, but this also doesn't bear out in the video. His legs are NEVER behind in the movement and his upper body does not lurch forward. You would need a clear -> <- movement for this to be true. The other option is that he was spun around and the opposite foot (back foot) came up, but the video clearly shows that he does NOT spin and kicks with his front foot.
Furthermore, gravity still exists when you are on the ice. The man is wearing hockey skates (1-1.5 lbs), lower leg and knee pads (2-4 lbs) and restrictive padded shorts that make lifting one's legs high require a lot of effort…especially if you are to lift it sideways (blade/foot horizontal to ice surface). This is nearly impossible to happen naturally without centrifugal force, but we can see no spin, so there is not enough kinetic energy to lift the leg that high.
These guys are professionals. They have been playing hockey since they were kids. They know not to bring there skates any where near that level. I know there are circumstances where it happens but that was not one of them. He could have prevented his skate going up that high. He knew not to do that and he should be punished 100%. No question. In all of hockey there has never been a play even close to what has happened to Adam johnson. The one goaltender who had his neck slashed was so diffrent and complete an accident. This was no accident. He was deliberately trying to stop him from entering the zone. Was he trying to kill him???? No ofcourse not…but he still made a huge mistake and caused someones death. Manslaughter is completely warranted
Intentional. Manslaughter can be proven. Unfortunately the UK has light sentencing
Call it reckless and say it’s not worth a punishment??? If you’re reckless and it causes a life you deserve punishment. That’s like saying someone who drank and drove with their family in the car and hit another family shouldn’t be punished it may have been reckless but they didn’t mean it
I think once the video of the incident was reviewed manslaughter appeared evident
should be Hate Crime charges also ….just imagine if the roles was reversed??…😳😳 C'mon man…….
Based on what I see and know, this player needs to go to prison where he belongs.
It’s a well executed martial arts kick. Bring in multiple martial artist to the courtroom to explain their expertise. He identified his opponent, lifted his knee, anchored his hips and executed the side kick to the chest/neck/face region. When hitting the chest especially in this scenario the foot will always slide up to the neck but in this scenario he aimed for the neck. Guilty! What a shame he purposely did that.
