In this episode of Locked on Capitals Dan welcomes Keith Leonard from RotoWire NHL and they talk about the news of this morning that center Nick Backstrom is stepping away from hockey. Nick said that his hip still just doesn’t feel right. Nick who has been pretty much absent from the score sheet this season. Nick will go down as one of the best ever to play in DC. Backstrom is currently the Capitals’ all-time leader in assists (762), and he has recorded 1,033 points (271 goals and 762 assists) with the franchise. Backstrom also ranks second in team history in points (1,033), games played (1,105), power-play points (421) and overtime goals (9).
Later they talk about who will take his place. The first one to get his opportunity is Connor McMichael. Connor has played wing to start the season, but center is his natural position.
In the final segment they talk about what’s behind the Capitals great play as of late and why they got off to a slow start.

I think they will have CMM at center and should bring Miro up and play LW on the second line
This is hard on two different levels. One because this is Backy. It’s never easy to find a figure that held so much importance as Backy did. On a business aspect this is extremely frustrating. The $9.2 mil he is on the books due would have been monumental this off-season that just passed. That money could have brought in the likes of Debricat or Nylander in a trade. Or out there signing a big name. To fold an entire off-season for 8 games is frustrating.
Sad day but a career that will be celebrated and remembered.
we love backstrom , he had to know if he could return to form, i do wish he figured that out the 2nd half of last season, I dont think its too early to talk about the financial cap situation and now with pacheretti and maybe another scorer coming in due to backstrom leaving is promising. backstrom has helped his team again.
The Capitols can expect to finish in the basement of the Metropolitan Division. Peter Laviolette is glad they fired him.
