On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we recap a frustrating 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres to cap a disappointing road trip at 1-2. We start by discussing the impact Jared Spurgeon’s return had on the Wild special teams, with arguably their best performance of the season still not being enough for the Wild to win. We discuss the different culprits for losses this year seemingly rearing their heads at the most inopportune times, and how the Wild not being able to overcome one or two mistakes is worrisome. We look at the overall shooting numbers for the Wild this season, with some concerning numbers regarding blocked shots and shots that miss the net altogether. We discuss how when you take those two numbers out of your total shot chart, it leaves you with very small percentages to work with for your actual shots on goal, and in the case of the Sabres game how you can get a ton of high danger chances and shots from up close, and the Wild are still missing those too. We finish with a look at why it seems like there are two different sets of expectations for this team that are being used interchangeably where they shouldn’t be.

Somehow Greenway already has as many points for Buf this year as in over 40 with the Wild last year. I’m happy for him but I hope the Wild look at how that happened.

To a certain extent this is to be expected. The Wild don’t really draft players know for their shots, historically they’ve drafted more players known for their all around game as apposed to their finishing. Hartman was the only forward on the team that was drafted for his shot and he hasn’t exactly became the player the Blackhawks envisioned. Kaprizov:playmaker, Rossi:playmaker, Boldy:playmaker, Ek:2 way forward, Mojo:Skating, Zuccarello: passing, Foligno:2 way forward. They never draft guys like Snuggerud or Yager whose defining feature at draft time is their shot. Part of that is bc those players are highly coveted and can go before where the Wild usually draft, but the Wild have also consistently passed up the opportunity to take a shooter when they’ve had the chance in favor of more allrounders. So the Wild absolutely need to dominate the overall play bc they will be having a lower shooting percentage than other teams (especially teams like Buffalo that having been drafting top 10 for a while).
Wild fans need realize that YES the coaches (ALL OF THEM) are bad but the ROSTER just isnt that good either. It just isnt. This is a below average roster. Players gotta play too. There is NOBODY in Iowa that makes them better. Bubble playoff team that is better off missing the playoffs for a better pick. Guerin would only make a coaching change if his (Guerins) job was in jepordy.

At the risk of repeating what others have said already, the Wild don't have the skill that the other top teams have. Now, sadly, even Kaprizov looks like a shadow of his former self. Remember his debut season? He was electric. Still a good player, but superstar? To me, he's lost something, I don't know what, almost seems like he's playing down to the level of the team – he appears slower and is making mistakes.

Start calling Kirill Cough-prizov! Yet another game he coughs it up at the blue line for a breakaway goal! He has coughed it up for goals almost as many times as he's put the puck in the net! Johansson has not hit the broad side of a barn since preseason! Zuccarello is fanning more than shooting! Makes them look like a clown brigade with everyone standing on the blue line and then they cough up the puck before they get to the circle tops, forget the hope of getting a shot anywhere near the net! These are proffessional hockey players? Even when they get the zone, it looks like killing the emblem on the goalies chest is the mission!??? FORGET SOG, FORGET SHOOTING WHERE THE GOALIE ISN'T! As for the Stars, their stars have NOT been performing to expectations. Shut them down as they have been this season, sneak a couple greasy ones past Otter, and we got this.
